Giant leap for in-orbit manufacturing - seeding several dreams. One of ESA’s goals for future development is to create a circular space economy and recycle materials in orbit to allow for a better use of resource, such as repurposing bits from old satellites into new tools or structures. This is because when creating metal structures, molten metal is often used as part of the filament, or printable medium. 🚀 Electron beam welding in space is a very interesting approach due to the controllability of the beam, high efficiency, and deep penetration. Outside the spacecraft is already in vacuum, potentially providing a suitable environment for in-situ fabrication or repair. 🔬 What is largely unknown is how melt pools behave in the absence of gravity, where the effects of surface tension become more dominant.
