For some reason, walking home from the bodega tonight, I remembered a conversation I had when I was up for a journalism professorship years ago. I talked with the hiring committee about how young reporters needed to understand the trust that was being placed in them by their sources & to operate with the requisite humility in the places they were working and be conscious of how much they didn't in fact know. "We're not in the business of teaching humility," one committee member said. "Maybe you should be," I responded. It goes without saying I didn't get the job, but I stil believe in a profession so often tarnished by self-aggrandizement and big egos, that's still one of the most important lessons veteran journalists can impart to younger ones.

On the CTMT Substack, we're talking about the value of college journalism. We're seeing college journalists fill more gaps in providing local news, including breaking some big stories. Because everything to us at CTMT is all about trust, we're thinking about the role college journalists play in building trust in local news. https://lnkd.in/ezbYG5Z6

📰 FAU Journalism: Shaping Stories, Sparking Change 📹 In the Florida Atlantic University' s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies, our students aren't just learning—they're creating real-world impact through journalism that matters. The latest feature from Alexander Tabares, a student journalist in MediaLab@FAU, shines a light on Miami's growing homelessness crisis. This powerful piece explores the human toll of a new law impacting Miami's homeless population. Tabares captures the powerful story of Khalib and Elijah Carter, brothers struggling without shelter, offering a deeply moving narrative that gives voice to those often overlooked. This is more than just a class assignment—our students are tackling complex social issues, amplifying marginalized voices, and contributing to meaningful conversations in South Florida. By producing work picked up by leading media outlets, they’re not just preparing for careers—they’re shaping public discourse now. At FAU, we’re committed to empowering the next generation of journalists to tell stories that drive change and inspire action. This is journalism with purpose. I’d like to take a few moments to summarize this series about ‘investigative reporting.’ I called it ‘Investigative Reporting 101’ because I view each part as a journalism professor might view the first year of teaching the subject in a college setting. #journalism #investigative #investigation #reporters #journalists https://lnkd.in/eR3A8gEs

Are young people scared of making phone calls? Narelle Hopkin (Towie), award-winning journalist and Academic Chair of Journalism at the School of Media and Communication at Murdoch University, asked her students and their responses might surprise you. Many of her students find it rude to receive voice calls out of the blue, some will not answer them at all, even from a parent - rather they let the calls go to voicemail and respond later via text. Many said calls from unknown numbers can trigger a deep fear that something is wrong. Today's graduate reporters might be able to out-tech technical more senior journalists, but many still need reminding to pick up the phone rather than send an email when securing or carrying out interviews. To this end, at Murdoch Ms Hopkin has doubled the amount of time spent teaching the art of interviewing. "We’ve found that students are more successful, and their anxiety is lowered, when early lessons are devoted to practising phone calls," she writes in The Conversation. "We are never going back to the days where the family landline had pride of place stuck in the hallway, and its own special chair to sit on. But voice calls will always play an important role in communication. "Younger generations just need to pick up the phone and let their voices be heard." https://loom.ly/dVJZCYQ #journalism #telephobia #news #reporter #MurdochUni #MurdochUniversity #PhoneCalls

After 15 years in journalism, here's the key skill that I think sets experts apart from amateurs: Knowing what you don’t know. It’s about seeing the limits of your skills, understanding what doesn’t suit you, without getting stuck trying to prove otherwise. It frees you up to truly recognize and highlight your strengths, and let them shine.

A quick reminder to journalism students: Your job is to get the facts and convey them to people who need to know them. This makes it easier for people to make informed decisions. Just because a source doesn't like something, it doesn't follow that thing is not true. Also, you calling people on their bullshit is really the core of the job, no matter how much they want to pout about it: https://lnkd.in/g6MVpZVn
