The highest failed class in high schools nationwide is Algebra II. It's the tipping point. The foundational gaps have compounded too far. Take a look at one of our larger cities: - Only 17.5% of Chicago's public school students are at least meeting standards - Statewide? Only 23%. - Even before high school only 19% were making the cut. - Low income? Only 11% met proficiency in math in 2023. The numbers in many other cities aren't much better. If we want to survive as a nation, we need to rethink how we keep our students interested in math.
Amen. Many schools I worked at were scrambling for reading and math proficiency to get 12th graders up to graduation standard before it was too late. Would be great to get them there before hand!
Transforming boring middle school math classrooms into fun and engaging ones through gamification
5moYou are absolutely right! The foundational gaps is definitely the root of this problem. Another compounded factor may be the sequences of Algebra. Many districts have geometry sandwiched in between the two.
