The absolute buzz you get when you tell a learner, that you've seen develop both professionally and personally over 15 or 18 months, they have achieved a Pass, Merit or a Distinction in their apprenticeship, is something I haven't experienced in any other role. Apprenticeships are NOT just for trades, or just for school leavers or an easy option. What they are, is the best way to develop yourself and something I wish I had known about before doing a degree. A lot of apprentices have total control and management of all external communications, implement new strategic campaigns and know more about what's trending than most people I know. Any business can benefit from a marketing apprentice, they just don't know about them. #chooseanapprentice

As of the 1st July 2024 there is an important update on current government incentives for apprentices and businesses. If you are thinking about putting on an apprentice do it before these changes take affect. 🗣 Sue Webber MSP has highlighted the importance of apprenticeships and stated "traditional skills such as roofing are essential"... Ms Webber, a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Lothian (Region), recently spent time with Scott Miller, Chair of NFRC Scotland, and his team from Compass Roofing, on a residential renovation project where she observed traditional slating skills and discussed the importance of apprenticeships. Supporting young people is Cllr Sharon Blundell’s priority during her year as Chair of South Norfolk Council. She visited Yelverton Garage and met owner Jerry Goodenough, and his latest apprentice Campbell, who confirmed that apprenticeships are hard to find. Jerry added, “My three previous apprentices still work with me, and learning goes both ways. I’m learning from Campbell about servicing hybrids, which is part of his Level 3 Motor Vehicle course City College Norwich. Applying for the Building Futures grant was simple, and all businesses should look into it.” Building Futures apprenticeships grants from South Norfolk Council are funded through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by Apprenticeships Norfolk . Carpentry Australia were proud to have been part of the insightful “Victorian Apprenticeship Taskforce and Response” webinar led by James Montgomery, Executive Director of Apprenticeships Victoria. The session underscored the challenges facing the apprenticeship system, with alarming statistics showing up to 60% of apprenticeship cancellations occur in their first year, and 80% of cancellations before completing their second year. At Carpentry Australia, our mission is to "keep the hammer swinging for longer,” and we're committed to improving these figures. Currently, carpentry is one of the trades leading the way with a 60% plus completion rate—a benchmark we're dedicated to raising even higher. Through sponsoring the cost of all apprenticeship members, we strive to support every apprentice on their journey, from training to workforce readiness. The Taskforce’s recommendations, like independent oversight, mental health support, and improved communication, align with our goals for a safer, better-supported workforce.
