I loved this audience. I was invited to IIT Roorkee to speak at their Women’s Day event. The event’s theme was sustainable innovation. The night before the event, I gathered my thoughts and decided to approach the topic differently. I chose to speak about the soft power the youth possesses. Thus, I spoke about: 1. The power of questions: I spoke about how the world around us has sold obedience as a virtue. The audience and I went to discuss various everyday things that have been normalised but shouldn’t be normal. I talked about women’s suffrage movement and how once upon a time, the society deemed women to be unfit to vote, and it was a small section of the population who thought and fought about it. I spoke about Savitribai Phule and her courage to educate young girls when the world was against her. We talked plenty. 2. The power of influence: I spoke about the real influence they yield outside of social media. And how that influence could change the world. 3. The power of empathy: I spoke about othering fellow people based on ignorance or apathy. I discussed recognising privilege. I spoke about how privilege is an unearned advantage which many of us have, in different contexts. I spoke about privilege being the lack of oppression. I talked about developing empathy by recognising our privileges. And about lending a respectful ear to everyone. How every person on earth has some knowledge that we don’t. Finally, I spoke about using these powers to recognise opportunities for innovation and problems to solve, beyond those being solved for just a few of us.
