I've been championing the cause of increasing women's participation in cybersecurity and have been actively mentoring women at the Mass Cyber Center to inspire more to enter the field. However, despite these efforts, it’s discouraging to witness so many talented women leaving the profession, as highlighted in this CSO article. Attending IT conferences and round tables with CSOs and CISOs, where I'm often the only woman at the table, underscores the urgency of addressing this issue. We need to do more to create an inclusive environment that not only attracts but retains women in cybersecurity. Amplifying the voice and recommendations of my KPMG US colleagues in cyber Courtney Gleason, CISSP, PMP and Katie Boswell. The state of inclusion benchmark report from Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS) is cited, in addition to Courtney's lived experiences, in the posted article linked. In the post, Courtney references actionable steps to further women in cyber careers, which I also support: "1. Encourage and support women of all ages to explore their interest in technology and cybersecurity from an early stage. Provide resources, workshops, and exposure to help them discover and develop their skills in these fields. 2. Engage in continuous learning and advancement in cybersecurity careers through education, awareness training, and certifications. Stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices to enhance expertise and remain competitive in the industry. 3. Invest time and effort in actively recruiting and retaining women in the field of cybersecurity. Develop strategies to address barriers and biases that may hinder women's progress and create inclusive recruitment practices to encourage diversity."
