FACT ABOUT MUSIC ” Music" is one of the most difficult terms to define, partially because beliefs about music have changed dramatically over time just in Western culture alone. If we look at music in different parts of the world, we find even more variations and ideas about what music is. Definitions range from practical and theoretical (the Greeks, for example, defined music as “tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmony”) to quite philosophical (according to philosopher Jacques Attali, music is a sonoric event between noise and silence, and according to Heidegger, music is something in which truth has set itself to work). Harmony, History & Style - New Online Course & Workshops! 🎉📚 This new course blends analysis and music history to help you understand and engage with music on a deeper level. Using some of the most beloved pieces in the classical repertoire, the course will will help you: • Learn how #chords are put together to create a particular sense of style; • Cultivate skills of #harmonicanalysis to understand form and content in music; • Understand style in historical context. The course combines online content comprising video lessons and activities which are followed-up with live online workshops. The video lessons introduce concepts which are then put into practice in two analysis activities before each workshop. The workshops are live sessions and your opportunity to discuss the piece in depth, ask any questions that came up and compare your analysis with Lona's and others in the group. The first unit features two workshops on Thursday 27 June and Thursday 11 July. Be sure to watch the two introduction videos and two theory videos before these sessions, and give yourself some time to work on the activity. The workshops will be recorded if you are unable to join us live, and you will still be able to watch the recordings and view Lona's analysis afterwards. when you listen to the vocals you understand the literature but if you focus on the background music you will understand the technical brilliance that goes into making a song.
