We're excited to announce the release of the Ruhama Annual Report 2023 and our Strategic Plan 2024-2028, launched today by Minister for Justice Helen McEntee at the Mansion House, Dublin. Barbara Condon, CEO, Ruhama said, “Prostitution and human trafficking are exploitative, inherently violent and demeaning to women. We are witnessing daily the impact of sexual violence and sexual exploitation from which recovery is lifelong. We need to do more to prevent sexual exploitation and protect women and girls from sexual violence. We need more awareness of the issues that drive women into prostitution, and we need to do more to challenge male entitlement and the demand by men choosing to illegally pay for sexual acts.” Check out the Ruhama Annual Report 2023 here - we hope you find it informative and inspiring. https://lnkd.in/eRzy23Dz The Strategic Plan can be accessed here https://lnkd.in/eN_uYNfw #RuhamaReport23

Australia, we must do better. Shocking new research reveals 1 in 5 Australians have committed sexual violence in their adult lives, and the actual rate might be even higher. The study also found sexual violence in Australia is highly gendered, with significantly more men than women reporting use of sexual violence. These findings reinforce the urgent need to ensure combatting sexual violence remains part of the national agenda. 💡Sexual and Gender-Based Violence: looking beyond physical crimes 💡 November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and to mark the day this blog has been written by Carolien Jacobs of Leiden University, Patrick Kyamugusulwa (ISDR-Bukavu), and Rachel Sifa Katembera, all three members of the Humanitarian Observatory DRC. The authors argue throughout that it is important that we realise that sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) consists of more than only sexual violence, it also includes structural violence that regulates justice. This is also the case in conflict-settings such as the east of the DRC, where a lot of attention goes to sexual violence. Day 1 of the SCALE facilitated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and Child, Early and Forced Marriage (CEFM) Evidence Dissemination Meeting. Previously, different methods have been adapted to curb the menace of sexual and gender based violence in the Nigerian society, which is still a work in progress . In response, civil society organization under the Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement (SCALE) project came together in a cluster for the purpose furthering the advocacy towards ending Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV). At a meeting convened by SCALE / Palladium group, SCALE reemphasized the strength in working as clusters rather than silos to strengthen the civil society sector and their advocacies. The SGBV project adapted several strategies such as research, capacity building, strengthening of justice administration systems , strengthening referral system for survivors and awareness approaches to ensure that both prevention and responses are well delivered. At the end of day one of these 2 days meeting, the core discussions hinged on sustainability and continuous implementation of the VAP law in every sector: from religious centers to social gatherings and the judiciary. #EndGenderBasedViolence #Survivors #SGBV

During the 2022/2023 fiscal year, South Africa recorded over 53,500 sexual offences, with the majority being r*pe cases—a grim reflection of the ongoing crisis. Even more alarming, countless survivors remain silent, their stories unreported due to fear, stigma, and systemic challenges. 📣 It’s time to break the silence, support survivors, and demand accountability. We can create a safer environment where every voice is heard. Cowling, N. (2024). ‘Number of sexual offences in South Africa in 2022/2023, by crime’. Available at: https://buff.ly/4165Ndq.
