You know that moment as an undergraduate when studying and reading research papers You could swear that you would never read a book after graduating...... Well, It's a lie. My journey after graduation revealed how much we truly learn outside of school. My father often quoted a phrase from an old exercise book that said, “Learning never ends.” He would add, "You learn every day." This truth has deeply resonated with me at this stage in my life. I’ve realized that while life throws lessons at you, there are also lessons you must actively seek to grow and succeed. Nothing in this world can replace the value of continuous learning. I’ve been especially inspired by Ben Carson’s book Think Big, where I learned that knowledge is indeed power and that applying knowledge with wisdom makes it a superpower. Despite promising myself as a young graduate that I wouldn’t pick up another book, I found myself pursuing my dream of becoming a Chartered Accountant. I was privileged to intern at an accounting firm with a team of experienced professionals and Chartered Accountants, and it has been a remarkable journey. During my internship, I strengthened my communication skills through interactions with colleagues, external partners, and clients. I honed my administrative skills by assisting in the firm’s administrative department, and I advanced my computer skills as well. This experience taught me the importance of flexibility our world is constantly evolving, and we must evolve with it. #ContinuousLearning #CharteredAccountant #TaxConsultant #DoxixConsult

What’s unique about UTSA’s Accounting Program? Students are required to take a series of professional development courses taught in the accounting program. We teach this in their junior year. One of the things we do is prepare them for the meet the firms event in the fall. But we don’t just prepare them and send them to the expo. We close the loop. Tonight the class discussed the next steps. We talked about three things: 1) Following up with recruiters they met at the meet the firms event 2) Make sure they clean up their resumes one more time 3) Show them how to apply to the 89 different internships in accounting that are available right now We often talk about closing the loop in education, but we never do it because we’re so busy with other things. Tonight we closed the loop so that my 95 students can go out and grab an accounting internship. Academics is more than just theory. It’s about helping our students understand the profession they are walking into.

Student Spotlight – Get to know Audrey Burks, an undergraduate junior accounting student! “Hi all! My name is Audrey Burks, and I am a junior majoring in Accounting with a minor in Information Systems, set to graduate in December 2025. I was born and raised here in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and I am excited to share that I have internships lined up with Bellenfant, PLLC and Ernst & Young. As of now, I plan to pursue the tax service line. In my free time, I love to stay active through workouts and spending time with my Yorkie, Buddy!” Why did you choose to study accounting?  “I chose to study accounting because I excelled in math during high school and knew I wanted to pursue a career in business. Recognizing the strong job stability that a career in accounting offers, I am genuinely excited about the opportunities and growth that I will have in this field!”    Describe your experiences with networking events at MTSU. What opportunities should students be sure not to miss?  “Join Beta Alpha Psi and take advantage of Meet the Firms and the Beta Alpha Psi Top Golf event. This will give you the most opportunities to secure interviews, explore different firms, and make connections with recruiters and staff. During a few of my interviews, the interviewer mentioned, 'I remember meeting you at Meet the Firms.' Attending these events can make a lasting impression.”    Would you like to speak about the importance of internships and give advice on how to get them?  “Internships are pivotal for experience and could potentially lead to securing a job before you graduate. Interview with as many firms as your schedule allows, even if the firm is not your top choice. The only way to become a more confident interviewee is through consistent practice.”    What's your go-to snack while completing homework?   “Diet coke and Cheez-Its"     What is your favorite thing about being an accounting student at MTSU?  “MTSU has the best accounting professors!”
