The fight against demoviction in downtown Ottawa is gaining attention at city hall, as tenants push back against the proposed demolition of their affordable homes. Smart Living Properties plans to replace four buildings with a larger complex, but current residents fear displacement due to rising market rent. Residents, including seniors and students, stress that these rent-controlled units are their last defense against homelessness. Hearing personal stories—like Nicole Seguin's, who faces homelessness at 67, and Ben Emond's, who cherishes the community bonds—highlights the human impact of redevelopment. Smart Living has offered monetary compensation, yet councillors advocate for tenants' rights to return at affordable rates within new developments. This debate is about more than new buildings; it challenges us to rethink what housing truly means and whom it should serve. ✨How can cities ensure development doesn't come at the cost of community welfare?✨ #AffordableHousing #Community #UrbanDevelopment #Demoviction #OttawaHousing

Today, attended a local community leaders' meeting with Hon Bill Shorten to address the challenges facing public housing residents in North Melbourne and Flemington. These residents are currently facing uncertainty following the government's announcement of the demolition of high-rise buildings and their relocation. It was heartening to see Hon Bill Shorten's leadership and willingness to listen to the residents & community members' concerns. The meeting was a first of its kind, where community members discussed and agreed upon key issues, particularly focusing on the key problems facing the residents. The agreed topics included: 1. Providing assurance to residents regarding the plan for leaving and returning, particularly school children, residents employed to inform their employers, etc. 2. Advocating for the state government to retain public housing, which is vital for low-income individuals and particularly single mothers. 3. Ensuring proper infrastructure in the relocation process, including schools for children, access to transport, and employment opportunities. 4. The new Public housing to provide enough public car parking spaces to accommodate the residents needs. Hon Bill Shorten has committed to communicating these key points with the responsible housing authorities to address the concerns raised by the community & to organise a meeting between residents & the housing decision makers. #Mohamed Ibrahim #housing #public housing #homelessness #governement #social housing

"Housing matters. Stop stigmatizing." Housing is more than just a roof over your head—it's a foundation for stability, security, and opportunity. Yet, stigma surrounding affordable housing continues to create barriers for those who need it most. 🌟 Why It Matters: ▪️ Stigma can deter communities from supporting affordable housing initiatives. ▪️ It often unfairly labels residents, impacting their social and economic mobility. ▪️ Housing should be viewed as a right, not a privilege, for everyone. 🛠️ What Can Be Done: ▪️ Education: Raise awareness about the realities of affordable housing and its benefits. ▪️ Advocacy: Support policies that reduce stigma and promote inclusivity. ▪️ Community Engagement: Foster open dialogues to dispel myths and build support. How can we all contribute to breaking down the stigma around housing? Share your thoughts below! #publichousingagencies #affordablehousing #housing #government

#Repost West Harlem Development Corporation (WHDC) ・・・ NYCHA opens Section 8 housing applications for first time in 15 years NYCHA is reopening its wait list for Section 8 housing applications for the first time in nearly 15 years. Applications for NYCHA’s Housing Choice Voucher program will be open from midnight on June 3 through end of day on June 9. Created by the Housing and Community Development Act of 1978, the federal program pays the bulk of rent for low-income families who usually contribute 30% of their income toward the total cost. Demand for the limited number of housing vouchers is typically extremely high, which is why the city locked its wait list back in 2009. The decision to reopen the applications is because of a critical shortage of affordable housing and the overflowing of city shelters. OMGoodness! You have to watch this video! I've been working in the Gov. housing industry for five years now and you can see how both the tenants and others view the Section 8 program. There isn't enough affordable housing in any area to help those who need a roof over their heads. Section 8 housing tenants and landlords are not all the same. We need to stop thinking the worst and start building the best in these programs. Section 8 is to help those who need it, assist with building up a families finances to allow them to buy their own home, and foster better communities! What are you willing to do to help your Section 8 communities and surrounding areas?

DC, MD and VA are making strides to create more housing affordable to essential workers--teachers, child care providers, restaurant workers, first responders--so critical to our region's health and viability. Washington Housing Conservancy is working around the region to acquire market rate rental housing and make it more affordable to moderate and low-income individuals and families. In just a few years, we have moved from 11% of the 1,600 units in our portfolio to 53% now affordable to people making less than 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Read our Impact Report to learn more about how we are working to reinvent our housing system to promote opportunity for all. #housingaffordability #opportunity #washhousing #affordablehousing https://buff.ly/4cXw54g

For Elona, a homeowner and a community leader, #HomeEquals empowerment. "As a community leader in Bistekville 4, I believe it was crucial for us to effectively convey to the city government our community's perspective on different issues, particularly regarding our long-awaited access to permanent and decent homes. Our numerous dialogues with the city officials became our platform to be heard. We voiced out our concerns, the city government took them seriously and supported us in the process." The Bistekville 4 community in Quezon City used to be informal settlements, where over a hundred families lived. By partnering with the families and the local government, it became a thriving community. We continue to put the voices and housing needs of low-income families at the forefront of our advocacy and push for inclusive housing policies so that more people like Elona have a safe, decent place to live. Pledge your commitment to stand with them today: habitat.org/home-equals #HomeEquals #HousingJustice #HomeEqualsPH #housingforall #HousingAdvocacy #housingdialogue

For National Day for Grandparents and the Elderly on August 21st, let's explore solutions to provide safe and affordable housing for seniors: 1. Expand Affordable Housing: Develop age-friendly housing units tailored for seniors. 2. Promote Home Sharing: Encourage seniors to share homes for companionship and reduced living costs. 3. Policy Advocacy: Support rent control and subsidies to protect seniors from rent hikes. 4. Community Solutions: Foster local cooperatives and organizations to offer secure housing options.
