After landing in Phoenix for the RateLinx Insight Conference this week, I stumbled upon this great eatery: Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe. They had me hooked with the title alone. It's located not far from Chase Field. And they've been serving up classic Southern food for over 60 years. Ms. Elizabeth J. White opened the restaurant in 1964...and she celebrated her 100th birthday last year. As I scarfed down my delicious chicken fried steak, mac & cheese and green beans, I was reading all the walls, which told quite a story. Hanging prominently in the middle of the dining floor, was indeed the Golden Rule. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." It is as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. And when I think of some of my interactions with many of the most successful organizations over the years, be it in global supply chain or otherwise, their leaders operate with this principle in mind. Further, given all the multi-party problem-solving that supply chain professionals have to do almost every single day, I think the remedies & solutions would come easier if the Golden Rule were applied in each and every conversation. In fact, I know so. I've been there & done that! Folks, if you ever land in Phoenix on an empty stomach, I highly recommend Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe. And stay tuned for a couple of key takeaways from RateLinx Insight Conference, including the release of our TM Tech Survey 2024 results. I am so appreciative of all of the Supply Chain Now community members and my LinkedIn network colleagues that contributed to this initiative. Stay tuned. #supplychain #leadership #TuesdayThoughts #Phoenix

International Women's Day is celebrated every year on March 8 to recognize and honor women's invaluable social, political, and economic contributions every day in diverse industries and sectors. Today, I want to share my point of view on the impact of women in the restaurant industry, a sector in which I have been working as a consultant at YL CONSULTING Inc. and Pont Ventures for the last three years. An industry has been led by men for many years. The data shows that the restaurant industry has seen a significant increase in women holding leadership positions, including restaurant operators (marketing, finance, human resources, etc.), owners, head chefs, and CEOs. The statistics highlight this trend: -The U.S. workforce of chefs and head chefs in 2021 was 456,373, with 22.5% women vs 23.3% in 2023. - The total number of women employed in food preparation and serving-related areas was 53.9% in 2023, compared with 47% of jobs in the overall economy. - According to the National Restaurant Association Report 2022, 34% of U.S. restaurant companies are majority-owned by women, and 47% have 50% majority ownership. The restaurant world is shaped from the top down and directly reflects who runs the show. Although women have traditionally played the role of head chef in our home, this title extends to leadership positions in today's restaurant industry. Women have excellent culinary skills, and we can lead restaurant businesses in all areas. Building loyalty takes time Take care of your loyal fans Here’s some inspiration from Beyonce... I recently had the pleasure of dining at Union Square Cafe with Union Square Hospitality Group CEO, Chip Wade. I was transported back to my days as a leader there in the 90s, seeing the place bustling with guests and spotting my favorite item on the menu—the bibb and gruyere salad. Chip and I sampled several dishes, and our two favorites were a brand new item—sardines—and that beloved salad. On the train ride home, I felt grateful to experience the same flavor from decades ago. Ironically, this reminded me of Beyonce. She has been a superstar for decades, continually evolving while staying true to her loyal fan base, the BeyHive. Her concerts are legendary, and her ability to balance innovation with loyalty is something any brand can learn from. Later, I thanked Chef Lena Ciardullo for our dining experience and asked why she still kept that salad on her menu after so many years. She responded with an important rhetorical question: “Why would I upset our loyal guests? I am here to serve them.” Her wisdom struck me. Just like Beyonce, Union Square Cafe has found a way to innovate while honoring the past. It’s not an either/or decision. It’s both/and. Maintaining loyalty while embracing innovation is a delicate balance, but doing it well leads to lasting success and happy, returning customers. #business #hospitality #hospitalityindustry #leadership #management #restaurants #restaurantbusiness #community #purpose #culture #unionsquarecafe #customersatisfaction #loyalty Maynard Consulting

“The only competitive advantage that exists over the long term comes through hospitality—through creatively, generously, and consistently investing in relationships.” - Will Guidara Before #nbforum2024, many of our participants didn't know who Will was—but they sure do now. Last Thursday, he gave an inspiring keynote that took us through his journey in making Eleven Madison Park the #1 restaurant in the world. A few key takeaways we took from Will: 💎 It’s often the smallest, most personal touches that create the strongest memories for customers. 💎 In an age where products and brands are easily replicated, building strong, emotional relationships with customers is a sustainable competitive advantage. 💎 By giving staff the freedom to create joyful experiences for guests, you foster a culture of hospitality that benefits both the customer and the team. 📢 Tomorrow’s #hospitality and #wine industry leaders are shaped by the environments we create. Let’s do better! Recently, I attended an industry 🍷 wine event solo—a decision driven by my commitment to personal growth and fostering a positive environment within our Australian wine hospitality sector. While the event wasn’t free, the investment was worthwhile: exceptional wine, meaningful fundraising contributions, and the chance to connect with like-minded professionals. 🍇 Held at a renowned wine bar and restaurant, the evening began with a touch of nervousness as I arrived alone. However, within the first 10 min's, I was happily chatting in the bar area with my two new friends. The first wine was being readied to pour, setting the stage for a night of learning and networking. 🛑 However, not everything was perfect. When the young sommeliers—polite, professional, and welcoming—opened the first wine for tasting, the event took an unexpected turn. The manager, exhibiting behaviour still too familiar in our industry, interrupted with aggressive and condescending remarks: “don’t pour it yet, they’ll only skull it”…”tell em they can’t have another one”…”no top-ups!”. His actions not only belittled both us as attendees and his dedicated staff but also highlighted a pervasive issue—the presence of "bully bosses" who hinder the growth and morale of their teams. ✨ This experience reinforced my "why": I am passionate about empowering dedicated young professionals in the wine industry to enhance their knowledge, build strong references, and thrive in environments free from toxic leadership. No one should have to endure the negativity of a bully boss to advance their career and contribute meaningfully to our vibrant industry. 💡 Here’s what I want these talented young individuals to know: ✅ You deserve respect. No one should have to put up with a bully boss to gain experience or references. ✅ There are better opportunities. Seek workplaces that value your skills, foster growth, and treat staff with kindness. ✅ Build your network. Events like these are excellent for making connections and finding mentors who can help you grow your career without toxicity. 👉To the leaders in hospitality: respect for your staff and customers isn’t just about decency—it’s smart business. Today’s customers notice, and they talk about their experiences. Tomorrow’s leaders are shaped by the environments we create. Let’s do better. ❓ Have you encountered similar situations, or do you have advice for those navigating challenging workplaces in the hospitality industry? Let’s share insights and empower the next generation. 💬 #WineIndustry #Hospitality #Leadership #Career #Mentorship #PositiveWorkplace #Bully #HotelSchool
