Sustainability has moved from being an isolated outpost on the corporate periphery to a professional, structured function central to corporate strategy and governance. And yet today, the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) is at a crossroads. While more visible and valued than ever before, heightened expectations and pressures are placing the CSO at risk of becoming overly focused on compliance at the expense of innovation and strategic foresight. Amidst a backdrop of rapid changes in the sustainability landscape, BSR interviewed more than 30 CSOs to hear their perspectives on this dichotomy and understand where success can be found through professionalization and integration of this function. From these discussions, three potential paths forward emerged through which CSOs can: - Illuminate new business opportunities - Advocate for systemic change - Ensure that sustainability remains a priority at the highest levels of corporate decision-making In the latest report from BSR, go inside the mind of a CSO and explore avenues for maximum impact in the field of sustainable business: https://lnkd.in/ePbNCaHn This report was authored by BSR’s Chief Impact Officer Laura Gitman and Managing Director, BSR Innovation Group David Korngold, with additional guidance and insights from President and CEO Aron Cramer and Managing Director, Transformation Christine Diamente. #SustainableBusiness #SustainableFuture

Great to see continued leadership from #ERM and #WBCSD in architecting and delivering the critical transformation that all businesses are going through / need to go through, and how to get it done - fast ! Transformation is a business issue and has value (and risk), as well as sustainability, at its core. Quite simply, sustainability delivers value creation and business resilience, and we are increasingly quantifying this with our clients (>US$1bn value creation identified across our private markets clients already)
I’m delighted to share the launch of a new sustainability transformation framework by WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development and ERM Sustainability Institute. ‘Catching the Wave: Seizing the Opportunities of Sustainability Transformation’ shares insights, successes, and observations of 130 business and sustainability leaders, to offer a set of immediate actions to help identify and overcome barriers to change, expose material risks, capture new value, and safeguard companies’ future success. These actions include the need for companies to be honest about internal barriers to successfully integrating sustainability, focusing on three in particular: short-term focus, sustainability-as-a-cost mindset, and sustainability skills and awareness gap. The framework is highly practical and versatile - to help companies assess current performance and determine priorities in a coherent way. As always, we are proud to have worked with our longstanding partner WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development on this report. Both teams have done an outstanding job distilling our research into a practical guide for unlocking immediate action. I’m positive this will be an invaluable resource for companies looking to translate sustainability strategies into commercial success, operational efficiency, and resilience. Thank you very much Laura Gitman and David S. Korngold at #BSR for the insightful report on the evolving Chief Sustainability Officer (#CSO) role and their challenges. This will help organizations to question if the role of Sustainability in the organization is the most adequate when CSO is: - the Steady Manager that leads an established sustainability organization, prioritizes risk management, ensuring compliance and efficient efforts to advance a small number of priorities within the existing business model. - the Integrated Strategist that has a voice in influencing corporate strategy, within existing paradigms and business models. - the Transformative Change Agent that has a mandate to explore ways to influence and potentially reshape the company’s fundamental business strategy, governance, and products and services.

BSR OCCASIONAL PAPER FALL 2024 ON EVOLVING ROLE OF CHIEF SUSTAINABILITY OFFICERS IN BUSINESSES Very useful and timely Occasional paper from BSR, emphasising that the sustainability function is now better established and more professionalised in many more businesses. I so agree with BSR President and CEO Aron Cramer, however, when he warns in his introduction to the paper: “As the role {of CSO} has matured and been elevated, there is a risk that some of what makes the role uniquely important is being lost. Time spent looking backward to report on performance is lost to the crucial task of staying on top of profound changes. The need to deliver business value is necessary, but it won’t be sufficient if too little time is available to listen to external voices that see the world differently than the view from the C-suite. The laudable effort to ensure that existing goals are met cannot interfere with the basic truth that more ambition is needed if we are to achieve a more equitable economy that addresses the accelerating climate crisis.” The BSR paper suggests three “archetypes” for the sustainability function going forward: · The Steady Manager Focused on compliance, efficiency, and risk management, delivering incremental improvements. · The Integrated Strategist Actively influencing corporate strategy and integrating sustainability into core business functions. · The Transformative Change Agent Driving innovation and reshaping business models to address sustainability challenges holistically. Correctly, in my view, the authors emphasise that these are not mutually exclusive. There is a good discussion of the pros and cons of each archetype and situations where one may be better than the others. Laura Gitman David S.
