#Philippines / #USMC - Marines fly supplies to part of Philippines reeling from floods - story from Marines Corps Times: Japan-based Marines are delivering food to a Philippine island where hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced from flooding and landslides. The island, Mindanao, has been reeling from the effects of heavy rain that fell between Jan. 28 and Feb. 2, displacing an estimated 795,000 people, according to the U.S. embassy in the Philippines. By the end of Monday, Marines from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152 had flown three sorties to Mindanao and then back to an airbase on the Philippines’ main island, according to a U.S. defense official, who shared details on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak publicly. The Marines used two KC-130J Super Hercules aircraft to deliver 58,100 pounds of food and a 13,340-pound forklift, according to the official. “Support to our Allies and partners, and their people in a time of need, is a non-negotiable,” said Lt. Gen. Roger Turner, the III Marine Expeditionary Force commanding general, in a Monday news release from the Indo-Pacific-based force. The Marines are providing the humanitarian assistance in coordination with the U.S. Agency for International Development and at the request of the government of the Philippines, the news release said. Their efforts come as part of a broader response by the U.S. government to the disaster. The U.S. Agency for International Development is providing $1.25 million in funding for emergency food, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene items, according to the U.S. embassy in the Philippines. The Philippines is an important U.S. military ally in the Indo-Pacific, the region that is the central focus for the Marine Corps amid tensions with China. After a severe typhoon hit the northern part of the country in July 2023, Marines from an aviation squadron spent three days distributing supplies to remote areas that had been affected by the deadly storm. In that relief effort, Marines relied on MV-22B Ospreys, which are tiltrotor aircraft, and CH-53E Super Stallions, which are heavy-lift helicopters. The KC-130J Super Hercules, used in Monday’s flights, is a fixed-wing aircraft with a large cargo capacity. Full article: https://lnkd.in/eEM5Q-4D

The Real Story of the 757s. Reliability issues have plagued the RNZAF’s 757 fleet for years. The over 30 year-old aircraft are expensive to service and keep reliable. The average age of the Singapore Airlines fleet is six years. The planes are generally only in the headlines when VIPs and trade missions are subjected to disrupted flights, because they’re usually carrying media. But this is just one aspect of their work. The 757s are far more important to wider New Zealand government activities. As the Antarctic science community, civil defence and search and rescue personnel, and military use them – can all testify it’s time they were replaced. The missions they carry out are not like jumping on a regular Jetstar service to get from A to B. Often deployments take place at short notice, when and where airlines aren’t flying. And they are flying into areas that your travel insurer wouldn’t recommend! Recently, they’ve deployed troops for security and stabilisation missions to Tonga, Solomon Islands and East Timor. Normally, they would have been ideal to get people out of the recent riots in New Caledonia. However, the unserviceability of 757s two weeks ago forced us to consider bludging seats off friendly nations. New Zealand had to use multiple C-130s flights which complicated the evacuation process, and this created unnecessary risks. The aircraft form part of the NZ-USA joint logistics pool which supports operations in Antarctica. They can move passengers to Christchurch from the continental United States and Hawaii, and to Antarctica. More robust USAF C-17s, RNZAF and USAF C-130s are typically reserved for cargo wherever possible. During disaster relief operations, the 757s have a speed, range and cargo advantage over the Hercules. Large groups of people can arrive together, with their gear. The Museum Street team have travelled to and from disaster zones. These are chaotic situations where a military crew and aircraft can go, where a charter flight cannot. And what they carry isn’t suitable for commercial aircraft. Open-source information records the key role they play in transporting munitions and other sensitive cargo around the Pacific, often to and from Canada, the United States and Western Australia. These cargoes can’t be moved commercially. Using Hercules with limited payload, multiple refuelling stops, and crew rest challenges make them impractical. The 757 fleet must be replaced. They’re insidious to defence morale, a national embarrassment and unreliable in a crisis. As Prime Minster Luxon said in December last year “We have to call time on this.”
