In an interview with Economy Middle East, at ATM Dubai 2024, Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi, group CEO of Miral, discussed recent developments on Yas Island and Saadiyat Island. Highlighting 2023 as Yas Island's strongest year yet, Al Zaabi pointed to the impressive 34 million visits, reflecting a significant 38% increase compared to 2022. Notably, even the summer season thrived, with June, July, and August being the busiest months, boasting hotel occupancy rates exceeding 83%. Al Zaabi credited this success to Yas Island's well-defined vision and comprehensive master plan. The strategic alignment of theme parks and hotels, along with bundled visitor packages, proved to be a winning formula. Day 1 at the Arabian Travel Market! In this 31st edition of ATM 2,300 exhibitors from 165 countries are featured, with 41,000 visitors expected to attend. It felt (slightly) bigger than last year, with large (and better managed!) crowds of people, but also an impressive density of high quality professionals. Once again, Saudi probably has the largest stand, as it includes different regions of the country and features its giga-projects. Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi also seemed to have increased the size of their respective stands. Lots of interesting announcements, some entirely new, like the 5.2M visitors Dubai received in Q1 2024, marking an 11% increase year-on-year, or some resurfacing news, like Abu Dhabi's tourism strategy with intentions to grow to 39M visitors annually by 2030 or the GCC Grand Tour, a unified tourism visa for GCC residents that will make traveling the GCC more convenient and affordable. As I interacted with fellow industry professionals and listened to some of the seminars in either the Global Stage or the Future Stage I noticed an unwavering optimism for the longer term of the region, even if there are some clouds in the short term due to perceived risks with significant downward potential. The GCC region is on the fast track to expanding its hospitality sector with a 17% growth in hotel room supply, reaching 544,250 rooms by 2026, according to Knight Frank. Leading the way is Saudi Arabia, which will account for a staggering 80% of the new supply, adding 320,000 hotel keys by 2030. This aligns perfectly with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 targets of welcoming 150 million visitors annually. The travel and tourism sector is proving to be a game-changer for the GCC’s economy, contributing a whopping $223.4 billion to the GDP in 2023, fuelled by 76.2 million tourists who spent $135.5 billion, marking a 45.3% increase from 2022. - UAE leads the region with an impressive 80% hotel occupancy rate and 28 million tourists, making it the 12th most visited country globally. - Saudi Arabia follows closely with 27.4 million international tourists. - Qatar saw a remarkable 58% rise in visitors to 4 million in 2023, thanks to hosting the world's largest soccer event. The region is also seeing rapid growth in the cruise industry, projected to grow by 9.9% annually over the next five years, further establishing the GCC as a global tourism hub.
