Why did we create the PhD Success Lab? From our own experiences, we understand how isolating it can be to undertake a three-year project solo, navigating from one milestone to the next. Initially, it may seem like there's an abundance of time—three years. However, week by week, new challenges arise: - You're not entirely sure yet what the exact goal of your project will be. - You await a dataset to initiate your research. - You gather your own data, but the survey start is delayed. - Your experiments don't unfold as expected. - You are behind on your timetable. - You await feedback from your colleagues. - It starts seeming as if your project is progressing slower than others'. - Your supervisor is difficult to reach. - You haven't commenced your first paper as planned. - You realise the scope of your project is too broad for a single PhD study. - You need to prepare a presentation on your project. - The first paper seems to take an eternity to complete. - Your supervisor suggests running even more experiments. - Your co-authors are very passive, leaving all the work for you to do. - During your thesis committee meeting, you receive further suggestions on what you should do with your project. - You discover more and more literature on your topic that you haven't yet read. Lacking feedback from your supervisor … and so on and so forth. Embarking on a PhD journey entails managing a multitude of responsibilities. We lacked support during our own PhD pursuits, but recognise the value in receiving guidance on the dos and don'ts of conducting doctoral studies. Connecting with fellow PhD students to exchange experiences would have been beneficial. Additionally, having someone to advise on organising life as a PhD candidate would have been invaluable. Lacking this support, we resolved to create a mentoring programme where PhD candidates could access the assistance they need. Thus, the PhD Success Lab was conceived. Since its inception, hundreds of PhD researchers have enrolled in the programme, bidding farewell to the stress and challenges of navigating the journey alone. You can join us too: https://lnkd.in/eibwqnpV #phdlife #phdchat #phdcourse

📚 It's been a speedy first month as a PhD student at the Syddansk Universitet - University of Southern Denmark. Time flies when you're diving headfirst into research! 🚀One of the first tasks was writing my PhD plan, outlining my project's significance, research questions, and how I plan to address them. With great support from my supervisor, we completed it in a month. The plan also details my dissemination efforts (think teaching!), research participation, and coursework to solidify my knowledge base. After presenting it to my research group, I received invaluable feedback. Now, it's ready to be submitted to the PhD school. 💬Speaking of knowledge building, I began a Systematic Literature Review PhD course at Aarhus University. It's a fantastic way to learn the research methods and connect with other PhD students from diverse backgrounds. 📚 My first research article will be a systematic literature review. This involves searching academic journals for relevant studies, identifying trends, pinpointing gaps, and synthesizing the existing research. My focus is on exploring the attributes of chatbots that influence user adoption. 🎢 Literature searches can be a rollercoaster. The goal is to achieve a comprehensive, transparent, and replicable picture of the studies done on the subject. I discovered that the SDU library staff is a source of excellent knowledge and help when it comes to such tasks. 🙏A big thank you to Najmeh Shaghaei for introducing me to Tobias Rask Albrecht, who was patient with my rookie mistakes, kindly evaluated my initial search setup, and provided helpful information. While his feedback almost brought tears to my eyes yesterday (especially after the initial scanning of 700+ articles!), it ultimately improved my search strategy. Now, I have a pile of 1700+ articles to dive into, but it'll lead to a much more robust research foundation! 🔎 This is my first month as a PhD student. Still happy and motivated 😎. Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of working on programs aimed at supporting Afghan youth. One thing has become clear—despite the challenges they face, there is a deep and growing desire among young Afghans to contribute meaningfully to their communities. Their passion, creativity, and drive are inspiring, but they need support to unlock their full potential. In light of the current education ban in Afghanistan, programs such as of the American Councils are more critical than ever. With educational opportunities restricted, many young people are seeking alternative ways to learn, grow, and serve their communities. Through lunching remote educational programs, supporting youth initiatives through small grants, mentorship, and engagement opportunities, we can help them overcome barriers and foster positive change—even in difficult circumstances. Investing in these initiatives today means empowering a new generation of Afghans who will shape the future of their communities. If given the right tools and support, these youth can spark meaningful transformations that will ripple across Afghanistan. Together, let’s support Afghan youth in their pursuit of learning and service, regardless of the obstacles they face. Every bit of help today paves the way for a brighter tomorrow. 🌍 #Afghanistan #EducationForAll #YouthEmpowerment #Mentorship #SmallGrants #SupportAfghanYouth #CommunityDevelopment

𝗽𝗵𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗽 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 - 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟭🎓 The first year of a PhD can be a mix of excitement, stress, and anxiety. Moving away from family and friends, I struggled to feel like I belonged. As an international student, it's easy to feel like an outsider, but pushing yourself to meet new people and embrace different experiences is so important. My first year started just as COVID-19 hit, which made things even tougher. Remote classes and isolation made it hard to feel connected. If you’re feeling like this, know it’s normal. Here are three things I’ve learned: 1. 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Everyone is learning. I used to worry about sounding silly during virtual seminars, but asking questions helped me realize others had the same doubts. 2. 𝗻𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: We all have our strengths. My labmates are incredibly smart, but even they ask for advice. It's all about learning from each other. 3. 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: During tough times, I lowered my expectations a bit instead of stopping completely. Doing small tasks daily helped me gradually get back on track and regain my confidence. Confidence goes up and down. The key is to manage these ups and downs and feel proud of your journey. To all current and future PhD students: your journey is unique and valuable. Embrace the challenges, learn from them, and keep moving forward with an open heart. You've got this! #PhDJourney #GraduateLife #ImpostorSyndrome #InternationalStudents #COVID19 #ResearchLife
