About us
We are at the dawn of the fourth industrial revolution. A revolution underpinned by computational technologies, and massive amounts of data. This is not just a revolution in how we collect, analyse, and use information in every aspect of our lives. It is a paradigm shift, a fundamental change of the mind, and a new scientific age. For over 50 years, Essex has been the intellectual home of the world’s leading experts in data science. The Institute for Analytics and Data Science is a centre of excellence that connects with scholars, businesses, institutions, and authorities, to work on their data needs. Our mission - We want to harness the power of data to change the world. - We build confidence in decision-making, so policy makers can identify the right choices. - We work to obtain insights from data that can deliver actions with real value and tangible outcomes. - We also help people create new products and services that can bring about positive results for businesses, individuals, and society. The Institute for Analytics and Data Science is young, but ambitious. We are focused on delivering high impact research and our commitment to taking an interdisciplinary approach lies at the heart of this. We are developing new lines of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary foundational research. We are applying our research to even more real world uses, working with governments, NGOs, and businesses.

Reflecting on a Year of Achievement at IADS As we come to the end 2024, the Institute for Analytics and Data Science (IADS) reflects on a year of achievements. This year marked our 10th Anniversary - a milestone that highlights the impact and reach of our work over the past decade. Here’s what we’ve achieved in 2024: - 30 Awards secured, with a total value of £4,438,928. - Partnerships with 27 collaborators, including leading institutions, organisation, and industries. - 135 publications, with nearly 24% ranked in the top 10% most cited globally. - Diverse funding sources, including the Economic and Social Research Council, British Council, UK Research and Innovation, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, European Union Horizon Europe and the Advanced Research and Invention Agency. For every £1 the university has invested in IADS, we have generated £5.30 through research funding, consultancy and knowledge transfer. We are proud of the progress made possible by the dedication of our team and the strength of our collaborations. As we look to the next year, we are excited to continue driving innovation, forging partnerships and building on this year’s success! #IADS #10YearAnniversary #DataScience #Innovation #Collaboration #Research #Analytics #YearInReview #2024Recap

This case study highlights how G’s Growers partnered with Dr Ana Matrán Fernández, Dr Spyros Samothrakis and Dr David Clark to tackle variance in their iceberg lettuce crop using cutting-edge data science. The partnership shows what’s possible when innovation meets collaboration. #Collaboration #Innovation #IADS #Partnership #DataScience
The final case study we would like to highlight this year showcases what an incredible academic can achieve, especially if they are paired with an innovative and open business partner. G's Growers is an independent producer looking to develop an intelligent simulator system to apply new data science techniques to predicting and managing variance in its key iceberg lettuce crop. 🥬 The business teamed up with Dr Ana Matrán Fernández and Dr Spyros Samothrakis from Essex’s The Institute for Analytics and Data Science, and and Dr David Clark from the School of Life Sciences to achieve this goal. Ana was fundamental to this partnership, and won this year’s award for Best Academic at our Celebration of Innovation 2024. Spotlight on This Month's Team Meeting This month, we were honoured to hear a presentation by Visiting Researcher Samara Souza from Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), Brazil. Samara shared insights into her groundbreaking research on violence against women. The project addresses a pressing global issue: intimate partner violence, which affects one-third of women worldwide, with one in ten experiencing it in the past year. The research focuses on crimes against women in Pará, Brazil, using advanced techniques such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) to analyse police reports and identify patterns, sentiments, and correlations within the data. In partnership with public security departments, the project aims to develop innovative algorithms for classifying crimes and providing recommendations to shape effective public policies. By giving voice to victims through sentiment analysis, this work represents a significant step forward in understanding and combating gender-based violence. It highlights the power of integrating AI and data analysis to inform strategies that prioritise human experiences and promote a safer society for women. Special thanks to Samara's advisor, Professor Reginaldo Santos, and the Postgraduate Program in Computer Science at UFPA(Computação UFPA), for supporting this impactful research. #GenderBasedViolence #AIForGood #NaturalLanguageProcessing #DataScience #WomenInTech #UFPA #ViolenceAgainstWomen #PublicPolicy #TeamSpotlight #AI #Computerscience #Research

We're excited to partner with businesses across the UK, but next up in our festive countdown of innovation is a special project happening just down the road from our Colchester campus! ESNEFT (or East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust) are a local hospital and community care provider, who came to us with a goal to reduce their NHS waiting times. Head of Analytics Hugo Herrera (AFORS) and AI Applied Research Scientist Madhu Sapkota joined forces with Dr Faiyaz Doctor and Dr Michael Kampouridis from the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex to use Machine Learning to over come this challenge. Hear from the project team themselves on how the project went! 🙌 📍 https://lnkd.in/gCxQj8y9

🚀 Team Meeting Insights: Collaboration in Action! 🌍 This month's team meeting was an engaging opportunity for inspiration and knowledge-sharing. 🎤 Damiano Duranti, visiting researcher from the Università di Trento, Italy, shared an insightful presentation on the innovative research happening at his institution. ✨ Our Postgraduate Research students, David Barragán Alcántar and Fatimah Faraji, spoke about their experiences with the The Alan Turing Institute's Enrichment Scheme and the collaborative Data Study Groups. The Enrichment Scheme is designed for PhD students looking to enhance and broaden their research by connecting with The Alan Turing Institute's community in data science and AI. It offers the opportunity to engage with world-class researchers, access resources, and develop new collaborations. For those considering the Enrichment Scheme, applications for the next academic year typically open in December or January. A Data Study Group is an intensive collaborative hackathon hosted by The Alan Turing Institute. These events bring together industry, government and third-sector organisations as 'Challenge Owners' with real-world problems and datasets. Multi-disciplinary researchers from academia work to develop innovative data science solutions. At the end of each session, teams present their findings, combining creativity, expertise and real-world impact. 📌 Find out more about the Enrichment Scheme: https://lnkd.in/gWbBqYQ 🔗 More info on Data Study Groups: https://lnkd.in/eDSzA5vS #DataScience #AlanTuringInstitute #Collaboration #Innovation #ResearchImpact #EnrichmentScheme
