As the Career College Transition Fair comes up April 17 at Seymour High School, we are introducing you to the participants. Jackson County REMC In 1935, two important events led to the founding of Jackson County REMC. The state legislature passed the Indiana REMC Act, and on May 11, the U.S. Congress passed the bill establishing the Rural Electrification Administration, which became part of the Rural Utilities Service in 1994. The first public meeting to organize an REMC in Jackson County was held on Nov. 5, 1936. The first REA loan to Jackson County REMC was approved Sept. 22, 1937, for $100,000. The first pole was set Feb. 12, 1938. Actual connection of electricity to homes began on Tuesday, June 28, 1938. During 1939 and 1940, it was agreed to enlarge the service area to include parts of adjacent counties. Today, Jackson County REMC is a member-owned rural electric cooperative headquartered in Brownstown that serves 10 counties. There are 20,206 members served by 24,200 active meters in place on 2,944 miles of line, an average of 8.4 meters per mile. It's a nonprofit cooperative, meaning no stock is owned, there are no dividends declared and any excess of revenue over expenses (margins) is treated as capital contributed by each member in proportion to the amount of electricity purchased. I’m not much for conventional thinking. For grad school I picked a small for-profit grad school in Colorado. Why a for-profit school right out of college? No idea. Why Colorado? 🤷🏻♂️ In my head, all that mattered was the piece of paper that said I could do what I wanted to do. Didn’t really matter much how I got it. That’s what I’d decided to do so that’s what I did. Despite the lack of academic clout, it was actually a really good experience. My professors were in the field practicing the things they were teaching and I still keep in touch with some of them today. They were true professionals and shaped my career. I graduated in 2009. Unfortunate timing. Job prospects were not great in 2009 so I moved to a small town in Missouri to work at a drug and alcohol rehab. Also a good experience, but in an unexpected way. By this time it was clear that counseling was not a good fit. For a lot of reasons. So I made the decision to leave that field and try something different. The FBI. Yes, I applied for, interviewed for, and got a conditional offer of employment to be a special agent for the FBI. Another interesting turn in my caeer path. Which I’ll pick up tomorrow. Career paths are not linear.

Varied routes in, yes. Plus, and this is a big plus, there are far more aspects to planning than housing or domestic extensions. So forget what the newspaper hacks say. Planning covers all sorts of things you may take for granted be it power generation and distribution, employment in its various typologies - logistics, manufacturing, data centre - airport and port provision, minerals, national and regional infrastructure provision, healthcare provision from a GP practice to specialist hospitals, to biodiversity, archaeology, and site decontamination to name but a few of the avenues it embraces.
With all the excitement of A-level and GCSE results days this month, have you considered your next career steps? Learn about some of the varied routes into Town Planning and pick up some key advice 👇 https://lnkd.in/dJMKTaE6

Career talk with 4th-8th graders from Socorro ISD was a success! What was made clear is that it’s crucial to start discussing the range of opportunities available to students, especially in fields that will be vital in the coming decades. Given the rapidly evolving job market, especially with the rise of green jobs and roles focused on climate and sustainability, it’s clear that today’s students need to be aware of these emerging fields. The workforce of the future will not only require technical expertise but also a broad range of skills and perspectives, including those focused on thought leadership, policy, and justice. Integrating discussions about climate and technology careers into career showcases can help prepare students for these future opportunities. It’s also essential to emphasize the importance of diversity in these fields, as marginalized communities often face the greatest challenges from climate change and thus have a vital role in shaping solutions and policies. After Saturday's career showcase, it was made apparent that Peek Counsel can play a pivotal role in developing a climate career pipeline for students in our community, for our voices are needed more than ever in those spaces.
