The landscape of law enforcement recruitment has shifted dramatically. Not long ago, there was an oversupply of police officers, making it tough to secure a position. Many officers had to apply to multiple departments, just hoping to get a foot in the door. Today, the tables have turned. Departments are now struggling to find qualified candidates and are often forced to lower their standards to fill vacancies. Officers, the power is in your hands. Take the time to research potential departments, talk to fellow officers, and choose an environment that values you—not just as an employee, but as a person. Look for a department that supports your physical, mental, and financial well-being. In this new era, finding the right fit is crucial. "You're a long way from home. What are you doing in *insert state here* ?" We travel a lot, so we hear that question a lot, including today while recruiting at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Tacoma, Washington. The answer to that question is always the same. "We are looking for future Arizona State Troopers... they just don't live in Arizona yet." There are great candidates all over the country. If we were to restrict our recruiting efforts to within Arizona's borders only, we would miss out on a lot of them. Motivated people move cross-country for great job opportunities in other industries all the time, so why would that be different when seeking a career with an elite law enforcement agency? The simple answer: It's not. A comprehensive recruiting plan is one that targets the best candidates, both in- and out-of-state.

I'm always looking to uncover companies/industries/sectors that are hiring and may not be on job seekers' usual radar screens. Today it's private security and prisons. Not a fun topic...but a multi-billion dollar industry! According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics U.S. The job outlook for Police Officers and Detectives is about to grow 3% from 2022 to 2032 which is about as fast as the average for all occupations. The states that have a higher job outlook are ones that have bigger city's like California and New York.

We are at a point where many applicants can “write their ticket” to the location or department of their choice. Want #RuralBadge cred? Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is hiring game warden and park police trainees right now (https://lnkd.in/eF3ucn3m). Are you a city person? Southern locales like Savannah Police Department are hiring (https://lnkd.in/ef6y_UVr). Detroit Police Department is hiring too- be part of the change to bring a revival to the Motor City (https://lnkd.in/eptyuE-k). I remember a very different job environment and economy in 2009 when I was finishing my degree at Roanoke College. It seemed like no one was hiring and those that were required applicants to submit a lengthy (and often costly due to certified background checks) application, only to get #ghosted at some point in the hiring process. Conservatively, I submitted upwards of 40 applications across the Southeast- made it to an oral board with Chesterfield County Police Department. I had a COPS-grant funded position at Wilson Police Department (NC), only for the grant to be awarded to another municipality. Thankfully, I was able to get a start at Asheville Police Department with great real-world experience and support from Michael Lamb and other academy instructors. Sure, some departments that are hiring have major issues. Do your research. Make sure it’s a place you actually want to go to. Check out housing, schools, and other factors if you have a family. The important thing is to start the process now as oftentimes administrative bureaucracy slows down the onboarding process to the point that life changes have happened prior to the individual starting with that agency. Get out there and make it happen TODAY! Still on the fence? Why not do a ride-along if offered in your area or a Citizens’ Police Academy? These are great ways to assess if this field is a good fit. Although rewarding, being a police officer is a high-stress and risky career. Understanding why police officers choose this career, why they stay, and why they leave may help improve recruitment and retention and advance the well-being of agencies, communities, officers, and their families. That's why NPI, in collaboration with George Mason University's (GMU) Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy and the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia, is conducting a multi-year-long study analyzing variations in officers' career paths, factors in decision-making, and significant "turning points."
