With Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowships closing on Monday 22 April, TRI has reached out to past recipients to hear about their success. TRI-based Professor Jyotsna Batra from QUT (Queensland University of Technology) (pictured) and Dr John Lee from The University of Queensland shared some of their tips: DO - keep it simple - think about your end-user so the research has a clear application - know what industry needs - approach industry partners and start the application early - identify research milestones clearly - justify your budget - be persistent (neither Prof Batra or Dr Lee secured a fellowship on their first attempt) - take on feedback and learn from your mistakes. DON'T - use jargon or be highly technical - leave it to the last minute - be too ambitious - be genetic or unfocused - neglect feedback. In week 5 Professor Russell Goodall welcomed over 20 first year students in the 2024 cohort to the University of Sheffield, for a week of classroom-based learning about Leadership and Researcher Skills. The students learnt about how to frame research questions, project planning and management, scientific communication methods, structuring a research paper, data visualisation, research ethics in publishing and networking skills. The sessions were supported by current and alumni PhD students in the Advanced Metallic Systems CDT at Sheffield, and had an opportunity to practice their networking skills at a lunchtime outreach activity, with 'A' level students who had recently participated in the Nuffield Research Placement scheme and were presenting their own research posters, and also met PhD students in the Advanced Metallic Systems CDT at Sheffield.
