Simon says…
Simon Sinek emphasises that true leadership is about taking care of those in your charge. He likens leadership to parenting—a complex and nuanced role. As a parent myself, I understand this deeply. Each child, much like each team member, requires a different approach. Some need tender love and care, while others need vigorous motivation and inspiration. At the core, all need loving discipline, a touch of humour, and acceptance of their individuality.
As much as we, as parents, may want our children to emulate us, we also want them to avoid our mistakes and to become their unique selves. This individuality is how they can best contribute to the world. Similarly, as leaders, we must avoid micromanaging, distrusting, badmouthing, or undermining our people. Such actions only serve to disengage and disconnect them, eroding the faith, hope, and trust they have in us.
Our people see us as more than just guideposts for the future. They view us as their inspiration and hope. When things go wrong, they need to know there is a safety net, a home to return to, and at the very least, a shoulder to cry on. Leadership is about being that pillar of support and ensuring our team members feel valued and secure.
Failing to provide this security wil lead us to lose team members who can drive our businesses to definate success.
It’s all about our people.
Great leaders are like great parents. They're always learning AND make sure those in their care benefit from what they've learned.
