The MCC team celebrates and supports the goal of National Reconciliation Week - the goal of a just, equitable, and reconciled Australia. 'Now more than ever,' we must acknowledge and address the disparities faced by Indigenous communities, particularly in the context of health and medical research. Indigenous Australians have unique cultural perspectives and experiences crucial to understanding health and wellness. However, their voices are often underrepresented in medical research. We commit to focusing on inclusion, understanding, and learning in the work we do. #NRW2024 #Reconciliation #IndigenousHealth

In 2021, I was invited to speak before the European Parliament about my experience in care in England and my role in the Independent Care Review. It was interesting to see that, across Europe, the care systems for young people focus more on positive outcomes, ensuring stability and providing a foundation for growth. In contrast, I believe that in England, we are still working with policies that date back to the 1970s. It is essential that we revamp our system to align with global expectations, particularly those in Europe. #changeiscoming

🇬🇧🇪🇺 ”#Prevention is better than cure”: How to get from political rhetoric of the new Labour Party (UK) government to making prevention a routine part of government business - and the problem finds the same pattern across #Europe and the world. Given that this idea has risen then fallen off the policy agenda so often, what would make the difference this time? “Three factors explain this gap between enthusiastic intent and real-world practices: low #clarity, #congruence, and #capacity.” 🔹To start with clarity. The language of prevention is vague, which helps to maximise initial support, but delays discussion on how to translate abstract aims into concrete action. 🔹Secondly, when governments make sense of prevention, they struggle to relate it to the everyday routines and rhythms of policymaking or connect it to higher priority agendas. 🔹Finally, capacity. Preventive policies are often akin to capital investment – spend now and benefit in the future – but without a clearly supported way to demonstrate a return on the investment. Racism, discrimination, and health: handover policy ... The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) have collaborated to address racism and discrimination as determinants of health. They have provided input to the EU's anti-racism policy through a participatory forum. A conference was held to discuss the impacts of racism and discrimination on the health of people of African Descent and formulate recommendations for the post-2025 EU Anti-racism Action Plan. These recommendations include recognizing racism as a determinant of health, meaningful participation of affected communities, inclusive language, disaggregated equality data, policy mainstreaming, and addressing racism in healthcare and science. The recommendations will be formally handed over to the European Commission for consideration. https://lnkd.in/emnCz8ES #PublicHealth #Europe #StayInformed #StayEmpowered

Last Day of the #APHA2024 Conference: ✅ Roundtable presentation on the barriers and facilitators of telepharmacy use among older Filipino adults ✅ Oral presentation on the participatory research approach to characterize community health workers' work hazards and improvement of their well-being #Reflections on the 4-day conference: Building #trust with community partners is not a one-time event. It requires mutual #respect and genuine #engagement—actively going into the field, listening to the voices of marginalized populations, and demonstrating a willingness to work alongside them with open hands. Trust is established through long-term commitment. Public health often operates within a patriarchal framework, and it is essential to change this by being #honest about what we know and what we don’t. By partnering with communities, we can bridge gaps in knowledge. Research is important, but our true impact is measured by how we #improve people's lives. We should prioritize actions that help others over our own interests. This means advocating for policies and programs that support the underprivileged and working with politicians who can create meaningful change through legislation. Lastly, we should approach this work with #compassion and #patience, understanding that real change takes time and perseverance.

Sunday 07 April was #WorldHealthDay. At the WHO Collaborating Centre for Public Health Education and Training, Imperial College London we join Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the World Health Organization to call on all people to demand #MyHealthMyRight! including mental health. Mental health is increasingly acknowledged as a public health priority and human rights imperative. Unfortunately, laws on mental health still often fail to address discrimination and human rights violations, including in mental healthcare settings. The WHO together with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, have developed and published “Mental health, human rights and legislation: guidance and practice”. Providing key information on how to adopt a human rights-based approach when reforming, implementing, or evaluating mental health related laws, so that countries can assess whether their laws align with current human rights standards. #uhc #sdg #sdgs #sdg3 #healthpromotion #healthforall #globalhealth #reasonableadjustments #mentalhealth #equality #Inclusion #mentalhealthawareness #DiversityMatters #DiversityAndInclusion #DiversityEquityInclusion #DifferentNotLess

💻 Interprofessional Grand Rounds 'Providing Culturally Centered Care for Indigenous People of North America' on Tuesday, October 15 🔗 https://ow.ly/zUKG50ToASm Indigenous People of North America (IPNA) living with serious illness and their families have unmet needs within our health care system. It can be challenging to provide culturally centered care when clinicians have gaps in knowledge. Within IPNA communities, numerous disparities impact social determinants of health. Often, there are complexities in navigating the Indian Health Service and Tribal 638 programs, including understanding how they intersect with mainstream health care in rural and urban areas. However, there are cultural communication strategies for approaching topics of a serious nature to facilitate these conversations and overcome these complexities. In this Interprofessional Grand Rounds, the presenters empower attendees with the knowledge and resources they need to provide a culturally centered approach when caring for this population.
