The city is rolling out plans to guide how neighbourhoods will change as Edmonton's population grows toward two million people, reported CBC. "With Edmonton's overhauled zoning rules taking effect in January, new district plans outline where residents can expect more density in the years ahead, and highlight areas where new development is a priority. The draft plans are up for discussion at council's urban planning committee on Tuesday." "City staff say the approach will help streamline their system. It divides the city into 15 districts, rather than a patchwork of individual neighbourhood plans, some of which are decades old." https://lnkd.in/g6nk4wyp #edmonton #development #policy #population

Interesting to note that the area covered by the Peri Urban Councils Victoria (PUCV) supplies 41% of Melbourne’s food needs, including 80% of its vegetables. Yet, the submission also notes that protecting agricultural land is a challenge as the local populations grows, and that urban expansion is a major contributor to the loss of farmland in Australia. We would agree that planning decisions that reinforce town boundaries are needed, to prevent the outward creep of residential land use into agricultural land.
Did you know our peri urban areas - the gateways between the outskirts of Melbourne's metropolitan area and regional Victoria - are home to nearly 200,000 people? And by 2036, that number is forecast to increase by nearly 54,000 or more than 27%? Peri urban councils, also home to an important and significant agricultural industry, face unique challenges as they prepare to manage the next wave of rapid urban growth. That's why Peri Urban Councils Victoria made a submission to the Federal Government on its National Urban Policy consultation draft.
