In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, Social Innovation Labs bring together a diverse array of stakeholders to tackle complex problems. However, their success is not standalone. To flourish, these labs need to be part of a wider improvement and innovation ecosystem, strategically influencing change and connecting pockets of innovation. Our recent evidence review, undertaken by the Innovation Unit, underscores five shared features that define these labs and delves into how labs can achieve greater impact. Drawing insights from interviews with leading practitioners, we have identified areas where we can maximise the potential for innovation labs in the future. These findings will provide invaluable support for those commissioning and leading innovation labs and are relevant for anyone interested in how improvement and innovation initiatives can coexist to achieve greater systemic change. 🚀 It's all about innovation! At least it is on October 23, when the doors open for 'Innovationsdagen' at FÆNGSLET in Horsens. This day, employees, clinicians, and leaders from Region Midtjylland - and other innovation enthusiasts from the ecosystem - can indulge in a wide buffet of topics, from idea workshops, language models, transformation, and AI to the power of networking and the importance of trust-based collaboration. 🤝 The last theme, collaboration, will take the stage when HIA partners Allan Juhl, CEO in Emento, Karen Skjerbæk Jørgensen, CCO in Trifork Digital Health, and Thomas Balle Kristensen, CEO at Aarhus Universitetshospital, come together for a dialogue on what happens when hospital logic meets business logic. "True health innovation only happens when we dare to break away from the traditional customer-supplier relationship and instead build mutual trust between healthcare professionals, public, and private stakeholders, where we act as one united team. To achieve that, we need to communicate. So, I look forward to the dialogue at Innovationsdagen – because it's only through this approach that we can reach a shared understanding of what we want to solve and, in turn, make innovation a part of everyday life – so it doesn’t just remain a good idea.", says Karen Skjerbæk Jørgensen. Together with moderator Diana Riknagel, they will share their curiosity and thoughts on how we can only achieve the necessary progress in the transformation of the health sector if we dare to engage in new, trustful collaborations. With a focus on opportunities and the importance of mutual trust, they will also discuss the challenges that can arise in such cross-sectoral partnerships. Although the tickets for Innovationsdagen are sold out, the opportunities to expand your horizons are not! Stay tuned for insights from the debate. The photo is from FÆNGSLET at Innovationsdagen 2022 where the theme was 'system innovation'.

If we don’t reach people – does innovation really matter? The true value of an innovation is created when it makes a difference in people’s lives, and while we in Sweden and the Nordics typically rank high on global innovation indexes, we often struggle with implementing new ideas into daily practice. Last night, I had the privilege of hosting a network dinner in Stockholm with some of distinguished innovators and thought leaders to discuss what needs to happen to make sure more great innovations actually reach the people who need them. Here are three themes that emerged during our discussions which resonated strongly with me: • The 'why' behind our innovations is crucial. Without a clear purpose, implementation is unlikely to happen • Engaging the end user early in the process supports genuine partnership and co-creation, and understanding of needs • Sharing experiences across sectors about the journey from innovation to implementation can help identify and solve common challenges Thank you for great discussions Nassim Farrokhnia, Regina Summer, Lena Svendsen, Ann Therese Enarsson, Håkan Djuphammar, Fredrik Vernersson, Mats Rönnbo, and Cecilia Ungerstedt & Petra Eurenius for co-hosting. I am proud of our strong tradition of research and innovation, and I celebrate how we consistently punch above our weight, being small nations but homes to big innovations. However, only about 60% of recently approved medicines in EU is available to Swedish patients (EFPIA patients WAIT indicator), and actual usage is even lower. We are often quick to applaud the idea, but seeing it through to implementation is how we make innovations matter. The last mile is often the hardest, but that is both our opportunity and responsibility as innovators, so let's keep sharing and learning, and, like we say in Swedish - tillsammans kan vi göra en skillnad!

Happy to share that NWO (Dutch Research Council) is funding Copernicus-led research into one of the most complex challenges of our time: scaling digital innovation in a responsible way💡 The project focuses on responsible scaling in the field of mental healthcare, where accessibility and quality of care are currently under strain. “We start from the idea that insufficient thought is given to how these innovations could scale in a societally responsible way,” explains project leader Wouter Boon Professor of Innovation and Transition Studies. The project will study how innovators, together with a broad group of stakeholders, can already from the start of the innovation process take important conditions for successful scaling into account, such as alignment with regulations, user practices, business models, societal values and ethical considerations. The project is made up of a broad consortium of researchers from Utrecht University, University of Twente, UMC Utrecht, Radboud University & Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, with a wide range of partners from psychiatric care centres, digital innovation businesses, the public sector, regional hubs knowledge institutes, and patient organizations.
