However, the 1970s oil crisis reignited interest in wind energy as a viable alternative. 🌪️🔌 🔹 Europe’s Embrace: Countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark led the charge in wind energy adoption. Despite environmental challenges, the 1990s witnessed the consolidation of wind energy’s renaissance. By 2019, 1.42 million GWh of wind electricity were generated across 127 countries. China played a pivotal role, accounting for 39% of onshore and 28% of offshore installations. 🌍🌬️ 🔹 Offshore Wind: Offshore wind farms gained momentum globally, constituting 4.8% of total cumulative capacity. Key players included China, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany, Portugal, the USA, and South Korea. For today's video we're stepping away from food and taking a look at another critical topic of sustainability: renewable energy. 🗲 With the UK's commitment to decarbonising the energy grid by 2035, huge resources have been dedicated to ramping up renewable energy production, including solar, wind and hydropower. 💨 However our existing infrastructure for transmitting and storing that renewable energy is far behind our capacity to produce it - in fact, at times our wind farms in Scotland already generate so much power that the turbines need to be turned off since we have no way to store it. 🔋 Thankfully the National Grid is halfway through its 2021-26 upgrade program in which it's investing £16 billion to completely overhaul the UK's energy grid. In the name of maximising energy output, energy companies are installing bigger wind turbines further offshore. But the conventional wisdom that associates larger turbines with higher efficiency and profitability does not always hold true, according to INSEAD professors Atalay Atasu and Luk Van Wassenhove, together with HEC Paris professor Sam Aflaki. The researchers developed a lifetime value model of wind turbines to help planners and designers navigate the operational reality and complexity of offshore wind projects. This life-cycle perspective offers a full picture of the economic and environmental impact of wind turbines by considering their maintenance and end-of-life management, among other aspects that affect the long-term viability of these projects.
