Today is Self Injury Awareness Day. Self injury is most common among adolescents and young adults and onset typically occurs around age 13 or 14, according to the National Library of Medicine. To get to the root of this issue, we must advocate for adolescents with mental health needs and spread awareness of the risks associated with mental health crises and adolescent self-harm. A diagnosis, when approached improperly, can be limiting. When we lean on a diagnosis too heavily, we make it harder for ourselves to change behavior. A self-diagnosis makes this pattern of behavior even more likely to emerge. Diagnoses are useful. But they are also fluid and flexible. They can change, which can affect treatment approaches. When we self-diagnose, we are putting ourselves in a box that (without professional help) we don't know how to get out of. I am saddened to see published evidence of what I witness in practice. What can we do to correct course? What if we educated all of healthcare to identify SMI earlier? What if we had "permission" from insurance companies to use newer treatments with improved efficacy and tolerability FIRST line rather than 5th? What if health and human services budgets were funded, not slashed, so we could offer peer support specialists and psych nurses in every community? What if we were as proactive in psychiatry as we are in primary care? Today is World Mental Health Day, and here are 3 things to know about mental health and Turner Syndrome. 1. The Mayo Clinic reports that girls and women with TS may have challenges functioning in social situations, may experience anxiety and depression, and may have an increased risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. 2. The Clinical Care Guidelines recommend timely, comprehensive psycho-educational evaluations and re-evaluations as needed, at age-appropriate intervals for women and girls with TS. 3. You are NOT alone! According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 22.8% of U.S. adults experienced mental illness in 2021 (57.8 million people).
