🎥 Supporting Small-Scale Farmers in Manicaland through Global Shapers Mutare Hub I had the opportunity to visit one of our local farms, and it’s clear that these hardworking farmers are the backbone of our communities. To truly maximize their potential, however, they need our support! 🚜 Challenges they face include: • Sustainable irrigation systems to combat water shortages • Knowledge and resources for effective pest management • Reliable access to broader markets • Upscaled access to quality inputs and resources • Partnerships to increase production capacity • Handy equipment to make farming more efficient 🤝 Let’s come together to address these challenges and empower small-scale farmers to achieve greater productivity and sustainability. Together, we can build a thriving agricultural sector that benefits all. #SupportLocalFarmers #Agriculture #CommunityEmpowerment #SmallScaleFarming #Manicaland #SustainableFarming #Partnerships #AgriShapers #ZMX Zimbabwe Mercantile Exchange Raissa K. 🌍 In Sub-Saharan Africa, agriculture contributes around 20% of the region’s GDP. Despite abundant arable land and groundwater resources, poor irrigation infrastructure and unpredictable weather hinder crop growth, exacerbating food insecurity. Diesel pumps, while an alternative, come with high costs and environmental drawbacks. Supporting the mission to empower farmers through sustainable and cost-effective solutions, the Energy Entrepreneurs Growth Fund (EEGF) has partnered with SunCulture since 2022. SunCulture’s solar-powered water pumping and irrigation systems empower smallholder farmers, allowing them to increase yields, grow higher-value crops, and improve their socioeconomic well-being. The company offers a Pay-As-You-Grow scheme that allows smallholder farmers to pay in small monthly installments. 🌱 Take Josephine, a 52-year-old farmer in Sagana, Kenya. Since adopting SunCulture’s solution, she’s saved time, grown more crops, and felt confident about her coffee yields. Solar-powered irrigation is transforming lives, one farm at a time. 🌾 Farming in Somalia: Challenges & Solutions 🌾 Somalia's agricultural sector faces immense challenges—from frequent droughts and limited irrigation to inadequate infrastructure and soil degradation. But with the right strategies, we can empower Somali farmers and unlock the sector's potential. Here are some high-impact solutions: 1️⃣ Water Management & Irrigation: Investing in small-scale, affordable irrigation and rainwater harvesting can help farmers navigate dry seasons and boost productivity. 2️⃣ Education in Sustainable Farming: Training in soil conservation and modern techniques can help farmers increase yields and practice sustainable agriculture. 3️⃣ Drought-Resistant Crops: Promoting resilient crop varieties like sorghum and millet offers greater harvest security. 4️⃣ Access to Credit: Micro-financing and cooperatives can provide farmers with essential resources like seeds and equipment. 5️⃣ Community-Led Pest Management: Equipping communities with integrated pest management skills can reduce the impact of locust swarms. 6️⃣ Improved Market Access: Enhancing rural infrastructure and forming cooperatives can ensure fair prices and reduce post-harvest losses. 7️⃣ Climate Adaptation Programs: Early warning systems and seasonal guidance help farmers adapt to climate change. 🤝 With support from government policies, international partnerships, and local initiatives, Somali farmers can overcome these challenges. Let’s work towards a more resilient agricultural sector in Somalia! #Agriculture #Farming #Sustainability #Somalia #FoodSecurity #ClimateAdaptation

As climate change affects rainfall in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopian agricultural stakeholders are looking to boost wheat production. To help, we are proud to support a new R&D initiative led by researchers at #MaddaWalabuUniversity. The project will evaluate different irrigation management systems, introduce farmers to drought-tolerant wheat varieties, and provide crucial training on efficient irrigation techniques. The seed industry is confident the project will boost yields, improve food security, and improve climate resilience. Desalegn Dabi of #OromiaSeeds, one of the country’s largest indigenous seed companies and a partner on the project, is confident farmers will adopt the project recommendations widely, going a long way to improve wheat production. #WheatForAll #WheatForTheFuture #WheatForEthiopia #IrrigationInnovation #ClimateResilience #EthiopianAgriculture #HopeInAction #EmpoweringFarmers #WheatInnovation #ClimateChange #EthiopiaAgriculture #WheatProduction #IrrigationManagement #FoodSecurity #DroughtResilience #SustainableFarming #AgriInnovation

Our Initiative #Future Food Together supports the #WORLD FOOD DAY – Right to Food 2024. And what could be more important to us than supporting those who produce our daily food? Small farmers in particular often form the backbone of the food supply in developing countries, and yet they have only limited access to modern sustainable farming technologies, adequate irrigation infrastructure, and market access. #Future Food Together addresses these challenges. And sometimes all it takes is just a small incentive to create a big change. Read more about it in our story Small Impulse, Big Change from our project region in the Mondulkiri province in eastern Cambodia https://lnkd.in/eJYNeVfm

Kenya's agriculture is heavily dependent on rainfall, exposing this important sector to adverse impacts of climate change. This is compounded by the fact that rainfall patterns have become more unpredictable from what we experienced two decades ago. Erratic rains as witnessed in the last 5 years (see below) result to negative growth in agri-production. With over 60% of Kenya's agriculture being rainfed (as per graph below), the country's food security remains under threat in addition to commercialization of agriculture remaining a mirage. There's need to invest in irrigation solutions both at small scale agriculture and at medium-large scale setup. Solutions vary from water harvesting, dams construction, sinking of boreholes, farm water distribution, irrigation equipment and sustems setup, etc. Relevant financing products that resonnate with the payback complexity are necessary to achieve this agenda. I have participated as part of my work in development of well curated agri-financing products aligned to different production systems and dynamics in different value chains that have supported agri-ventures to become resilient and adaptive to climate change. January, February and partly March are normally dry months in Kenya and hence the need to explore these opportunity as we get into the new year. A SHIFT FROM RAINFED PRODUCTION TO WATER-FED PRODUCTION and recognising rainfall as a source of water from above is inevitable. HOW ABOUT EXPLOITING WATER FROM ABOVE AND BELOW THE GROUND. Let us engage in the new year and together take a journey to cushion our country's agriculture from the negative impacts of climate change. #SustainableAgriculture #Irrigation #CommercialFarming #WaterForAgri #AgriFinancing

The impact of #ClimateChange is being felt more than ever. Erratic rainfall & extreme temperatures are affecting #agriculture negatively. On this note I urge farmers to adapt #ClimateSmart strategies to overcome this challenge. 1. Cultivate drought resistant crops 2. Practice mulching or cover cropping to conserve soil moisture 3. Use compost, animal manure or organic fertilizer. 4. Get alternative water source eg. well, dam or borehole for irrigation NB: Avoid leaving soil bare as this results in rapid loss of water, reduce nutrient uptake, and poor crop development.
