13 years after the start of the Syria conflict, there still needs to be more opportunities made available for Syrian refugee students, according to Muhammad, a refugee who secured a scholarship himself and is now a facilitator on our Guidance Programme. A lack of information and guidance on the opportunities available to refugees is one of the key barriers they face in reaching university. It is particularly acute for refugees because they exist between several education systems. Took a session on public speaking in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency! Since 2019 I’ve worked with refugees on different issues, be it period poverty or financial independence. This time I worked with UNHCR on training refugee youth on public speaking. I believe communication is the key to development, to equality and to fighting against discrimination. If you can put your ideas across, if you can stir emotion you can really create a lasting impact. The idea of this workshop was to train these youth leaders on how to put your point across. How to demand for a better, more equal world. And how public speaking can be the tool to get there. We also had Anvita, Manvi and Sourika from the Her Haq team join the session.
