Certificates and training programs are important milestones in any career. They provide a solid foundation and open doors. But over the years, I’ve learned that they are only the starting point. Real learning comes from navigating the unexpected challenges of daily work. In hospitality, whether it’s leading a Forbes 5-Star team or managing VIP guest services, no day is the same. You encounter problems, make decisions, sometimes make mistakes, and most importantly, learn and grow from those experiences. The truth is, nothing prepares you better than real-world practice. Certificates might teach you the principles, but it’s the hands-on experience, the continuous learning, and the ability to adapt that truly build expertise. In my point of view, each situation, big or small, has shaped how I approach leadership and service. It’s in the doing, reflecting, and improving where real growth happens. So yes, celebrate your certifications, but remember: it’s what you do after them that defines your career. If you’re looking to inspire your team or improve your operations, explore The Art of Hospitality for public speaking services at https://lnkd.in/gig6rkGA or The Hospitality Consultant for consulting services at https://lnkd.in/gg_kdTZv. HOSPITALITY IS THE KEY FOR ANYONE When I toured the famous hotel school in Lausanne, Switzerland, our guide described all types of students with all types of career aspirations attending what is arguably the best program in the world. Why would a future Banker come from a hospitality program? Hospitality programs produce a well-rounded professional with the necessary life skills: accounting & business operations, travel & geography, food & wine knowledge, service & etiquette, and understanding people. When you instill the spirit to serve, you create an effective leader. In his book “Unreasonable Hospitality”, Will Guidara challenges any industry to harness the power of giving people more than they expect. Not just the customer, it’s easy to justify money spent to gain customer loyalty and he shares some great ideas on raising that bar. He inspires leaders to up their game with their teams, creating a comfortable place to experiment and grow. By sharing space to generate new ideas with his teams, they step up with front-line, impactful ways to make a difference in their specific areas. Giving ownership to smaller parts of the operation provides experience with new tasks and responsibilities, flooding the succession pipeline. There is a buzz about Servant Leadership; enabling an environment for people to do their best work. How will you raise your hospitality bar? #Hospitality #Leadership Guidara, W., (2022) Unreasonable Hospitality. Optimism Press. https://www.ehl.edu/

Today at Purdue University's Spirit of Hospitality Summit, I attended the "Navigating Tough Conversations: Effective Communication Strategies for the Service Industry" session presented by Amy Goodson, a registered dietitian and consultant. This presentation addressed the importance of conflict resolution skills, as well as ways to deal with difficult conversations involving customers, collegues, and management in the workplace. One key takeaway from this session was to avoid placing blame on upset customers and collegues by using "I" statements. "I" statements allow one to be clear and assertive but also respectful so that the customer or collegue doesn't feel the need to get defensive. Another key takeaway from this session was to address issues early on to prevent situations from escalating. Addressing issues with collegues or management as they arise fosters a culture of openness and trust in the workplace and limits misunderstandings. Overall, this was a very engaging and insightful session, and I plan to utilize these strategies throughout my career in the hospitality industry. #2024HTM492 #2024HospitalitySummit Purdue HTM - White Lodging-J.W.
