Today at Purdue University's Spirit of Hospitality Summit, I attended the "Navigating Tough Conversations: Effective Communication Strategies for the Service Industry" session presented by Amy Goodson, a registered dietitian and consultant. This presentation addressed the importance of conflict resolution skills, as well as ways to deal with difficult conversations involving customers, collegues, and management in the workplace. One key takeaway from this session was to avoid placing blame on upset customers and collegues by using "I" statements. "I" statements allow one to be clear and assertive but also respectful so that the customer or collegue doesn't feel the need to get defensive. Another key takeaway from this session was to address issues early on to prevent situations from escalating. Addressing issues with collegues or management as they arise fosters a culture of openness and trust in the workplace and limits misunderstandings. Overall, this was a very engaging and insightful session, and I plan to utilize these strategies throughout my career in the hospitality industry. #2024HTM492 #2024HospitalitySummit Purdue HTM - White Lodging-J.W.
