When the Ombudsman investigates cases of maladministration, did you know they have the authority to recommend actions such as correcting oversights or changing decisions? These recommendations are pivotal in ensuring fairness in public services. After the Ombudsman issues recommendations, authorities are required to respond within 20 days, either complying with the suggestions or providing valid reasons for non-compliance. This process promotes transparency and holds government bodies accountable for their actions. Important amendments to the Bail Act 1977 come into effect today. To assist judicial officers in navigating these changes, we are pleased to announce the release of three resources developed by the Judicial College of Victoria and the Department of Justice and Community Safety. These tools provide comprehensive support, including guidance on bail considerations for Aboriginal accused, a track-changed version of the legislation, and detailed assistance for cases involving Aboriginal individuals seeking bail. 4 ways the #justice system become more #peoplecentered. Tim Bunjevac gave great examples at a webinar yesterday, including: - sitting around a table where all participants are equal, rather than a traditional #courtroom - supporting #mediation, #ombudspeople and involvement by #NGOs and #community organizations - understanding the views of justice professionals (who focus on legal proceedings) versus #litigants (who care about whether the #judge listens to them, gives them a chance to express themselves, and talks in plain language) - using court spaces for community activities, such as an art exhibition. The goal is to build trust and confidence. The "SAFE-T Act Report by the Numbers" highlights the challenges McHenry County (Illinois) has faced since the implementation of the SAFE-T Act. The outline details that the county has seen a 30% increase in crimes committed by individuals on pre-trial release, a staggering 280% rise in failures to appear in court, and a 35% reduction in restitution paid to crime victims. These outcomes point to significant flaws in the Act, particularly in limiting judicial discretion and prioritizing release over community safety. These numbers are indeed concerning, but it's equally crucial to consider the broader context. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights previously released a report showing how the cash bail system disproportionately impacts Black and brown communities, as well as other underrepresented and impoverished groups, who are often unable to afford bond. To understand the complexities of this issue, I encourage everyone to read that report and reflect on how we can balance justice reform with public safety. #SAFEActChallenges #CriminalJusticeReform #CashBailReform #JusticeForAll #SystemicInequities #PretrialRelease #VictimRestitution #BailReformDebate #EquityInJustice #PolicyAnalysis #BalancedReform #CivilRights
