Great piece about "How to Tell Real Stories About Impact" in Stanford Social Innovation Review by Annie Neimand, PhD "Stories of impact should show how organizations are part of a larger movement ecosystem working with other organizations and movement actors to transform systems and culture through their unique contributions. These stories will feature multiple characters with different backgrounds, interests, roles, and perspectives, all working together to address an issue. When we tell these stories over and over, we can create a new, more accurate narrative of change through collective action." https://lnkd.in/gEb7CUxp

When communicating social change, the most common mistake I see is the lack of basic narrative elements such as conflict, resolution and well-developed characters. This results in narratives that feel formulaic and fail to convey the complexities of social change efforts. The article "How to Tell Real Stories About Impact" by Annie Neimand, PhD highlights exactly this. It emphasises a crucial point: it's time to move beyond perpetuating victim narratives and instead, showcase the complexity of characters engaging in collective action against unjust systems 🌍 In these stories, the protagonists are not lone heroes, but rather a network of individuals working together to effect change. The antagonists? Those who uphold unjust systems. By depicting impact stories in this light, we not only highlight our contributions to the movement ecosystem but also illustrate how real change is made through the collaborative efforts of diverse actors. These narratives not only inspire but also illuminate the path toward systemic and cultural transformation ♻️ Who are you seeing communicating stories of social change in the right way?
