HOSPITALITY - making people feel at home when you wish they were! Have you every thought about the connection between the word 'hospital' and 'hospitality'? They both come from the Latin 'hospes', meaning both “host” and “guest". The first hospitals were convents, monasteries and abbeys where travellers could stay on their journey before travelling onward or remain after a holy day was celebrated before travelling home. "The very best nurses and doctors didn’t just offer us medical solutions and cures. They welcomed us into a space of healing and care. In showing true hospitality - sincere, loving, non-judgmental welcome to another person - we become little hospitals for one another. We become places of care for broken and wounded souls. Being welcomed by others is as important for our care as bandages and antibiotics. Each of us can give hospitality: A warm word of welcome—even on Zoom. An invitation for a walk outside. A table set with simple nurturing food. Each of us can be a little hospital. Each of us can offer healing." - Amy Julia Becker Andrew and I love to welcome guests to our home. We've seen how that has become something our young adult children also value. What do you think gets in the way of showing hospitality? * * * * * * * * * * * * * I'm Fiona Brennan-Scott, Audience Engagement Expert (Ax). My leisure industry reading list and thoughts this week 📚🤓💭👇 Reading the Darzi report for NHS England, and listening to the media soundbites, I think some of the noises from the new UK Governement on reducing the effects of smoking, alcohol, and junk food have been quite promising. But harnessing the power of physical activity still isn’t anywhere near far enough up the agenda. I thought ukactive summed it up perfectly; “The opportunity now for our new Government is to unlock the full potential of sport and physical activity to help meet this need, and deploy our nation’s gyms, pools, and leisure centres without hesitation, urgently and at scale." Absolutely!! 👏👏👏 And the MSK hubs report quoted in their response is a great example of this potential in action - well worth a read itself. It’s not like the benefits of physical activity are new to those in power (or just out of power). Kim Leadbeater MP’s ‘Healthy Britain’ report for the Fabian Society in 2023 comes to mind, and the previous govts Get Active 2030 strategy covered a lot of ground too. But its not just political will to consider. Theres the reality of the UK Government’s "BLACK HOLE" budget, what that means for The Scottish Government (worrying reports), how that might finally trickle down to local authorities, and how that impacts our efforts to promote physical activity for the benefit of everybody. Community Leisure UK today published their ‘Review of Culture and Leisure Services in Scotland’, highlighting the impact of this financial landscape. I’m looking forward to digging into it, but fear i might be a bit like this at the end 😱😳🤯🫣 We can meet these challenges, but trying to make sense of it and how to proceed is tricky. I’d love to hear thoughts from others in the leisure industry, public health, or beyond! #LeisureIndustry #PhysicalActivity #Health #Wellbeing #LocalGovernment #PublicHealth #Darzireport Public Health Scotland Scottish Leisure Network Group Community Leisure UK ukactive CIMSPA Leisure DB Active Insight Sport Aberdeen sportscotland 🔗 Darzi Report https://lnkd.in/ezmJrxd4 🔗 ukactive statement https://lnkd.in/e3BqRjZQ 🔗 MSK Hubs report https://lnkd.in/ezApYXy6 🔗 Healthy Britain Kim Leadbeater MP (2023) https://lnkd.in/ekQ-KjtH 🔗 Uk Government Get active strategy: https://lnkd.in/eyRuq-NC 🔗 Community Leisure UK Review of Culture and Leisure Services in Scotland https://lnkd.in/eU--fn_Y

A huge thank you to @LindaMonckton, @DesiGradinarova & the rest of the team behind the very insightful & terrific 2-day #Heritage & #Wellbeing Conference @DelapreAbbey. It has been fantastic to be able to come together with so many others, from across the UK, who have years of experience delivering & evaluating incredibly impactful #mentalhealth & wellbeing support programmes & resources to share the benefits & challenges. There was enormous truth & energy in the beautiful, historic rooms hosting a breadth of presentations & workshops. In the spirit of openness, I spoke to many who, like me, are getting weary of trying hard to get the significant positive changes to the individual, & community, through these projects - now in their 100s - be embedded & mainstreamed within the modern bio-psycho-social approach to patient referral plans & to the support packages of those living with long-term conditions. The move from the old #biomedical to new bio-psycho-social model insists on an #transdisciplinerary & #interprofessional approach. There is a sense that many of the currently available validated measurements for assessing health improvement are not quite the right fit for co-created health creation projects in delivery through #heritage & #communitycare partnerships. It was freely acknowledged that the term heritage & the perceptions many have of the heritage sector can be a barrier - so with that acknowledgment, what further actions can we take to change those perceptions? If individuals feel heritage is ‘not for them’ regarding education, skills development or their leisure time, why would we believe they would think any differently when it comes to their health & wellbeing. That work, by its very nature, has to be through co-design, where those who don’t engage are, in fact, our experts in engagement. The conference was top for sharing lessons learned, celebrating health improvement, uniteing a growing community of impactful practice, & acknowledging there is still much to be done - together

This is a great reminder for leaders in the restaurant space (and leaders everywhere). In a world of increased polarization and information overload, it can be tempting for me to limit how much feedback I receive. In the end, I have to hear it, even when I disagree with it, because it's going to make me and the business better. #unreasonablehospitality #peoplefirst #goodjobs #harthouse

I love this sentiment and can recall how my actions have been guided by it as I have brought ideas to my leadership teams. I have experienced everything from great leaders who took the time to hear me out, support my work or helped tweak my idea to put it into play. I have also had bad leaders ignore me or take credit for my ideas. I admit that I was very hesitant to go to a leader more than once who ignored me or took credit for my work. I am not saying all my ideas are brilliant, or that there has not been a better way of doing it, but I think we can all agree that as individuals, we just want to be seen, heard, and valued. Reflect on your past experiences and how you handled acceptance or rejection from your leaders. Put yourself in the other persons shoes and take the time to hear them out. They might have something brilliant to offer that you can both benefit from! #Leadership #Collaboration #Value
