Reflecting on My Journey with Save Aravali Trust: A Tale of Volunteerism and Environmental Consciousness As a volunteer with Save Aravali Trust, I've witnessed firsthand the remarkable spirit of community and dedication that drives this organization. Every day, every month, there's someone stepping up, taking more responsibility, and embracing challenges with unwavering determination. It's a beautiful cycle where individuals come together, driven by a shared passion for environmental conservation. What strikes me most about this journey is how seamlessly volunteers fill the gaps left by those who move on due to personal or professional commitments. It's a testament to the collective commitment we share towards our cause. In this ever-evolving landscape of volunteerism, I've come to realize that planting a thought for environmental consciousness is far more crucial than merely planting a tree. Conservation of existing forests holds greater significance than the creation of new ones. At times, I've pondered over the significance of our actions. Is planting trees a novel deed, a necessity, or a duty we owe to our planet? The answers to these questions often elude me. Sometimes, I've felt insignificant in the face of the monumental challenges posed to nature. But then, a simple sight of birds nesting on our trees or insects visiting their flowers fills me with a sense of profound significance. Yet, amidst our love for nature, there exists a paradox. We humans often prioritize our immediate needs and desires over the long-term health of the environment. We seek shade under trees but hesitate to plant them in our own spaces, fearing inconvenience or extra effort. Our needs are indeed rising, and so are our greed. However, it's imperative to recognize that our existence is intertwined with nature. We owe our very existence to the delicate balance of the natural world. As volunteers, as stewards of the environment, it's our responsibility to bridge the gap between our love for nature and our actions. Through our collective efforts, we can inspire change, one person at a time. While the challenges may seem daunting, the power of collective action should never be underestimated. Just as bacteria multiply exponentially, so too can our thoughts and actions towards a greener, more sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/gfGThiU3

There is no easy way to say that. The salmon you ate today, was fed with fish stolen from undernourished nations. The salmon you percribed as a healthy food today to your patient/client, was fed with fish stolen from undernourished nations. A huge shout out to the work of Feedback and Feedback EU for revealing those astonishing data, in their new report, Blue Empire (https://lnkd.in/etbHMYJv). We need to redesign and rethink the Sustainable Mediterranean Diet, taking into consideration the pollution impact of industrial fish farming, the sustainability of Mediterranean fish stocks, the impact of industrial activities to local communities, and the social justice we own to the most vulnerable. We need to talk to each other. Doctors, nutritionists, dieticians, and Lifestyle Medicine professionals, need to sit at the same table with environmental scientists, marine biologists, sustainability experts, and social scientists. #BlueEmpire #Feedback #FeedbackEU #LifestyleMedicine #SustainableMediterraneanDiet #SocialJustice
Could that salmon fillet effectively be starving West African families of their traditional diet of anchovies and sardinella, and destroying centuries-old livelihoods? Rauch Foundation partner Francesco De Augustinis explores this question and more in his exquisite new documentary, which complements the report we shared yesterday from Feedback Global. Starting with sea bass and sea bream farms in Italy, Greece and Spain, the documentary shows how fish farm pollution is transforming pristine waters into dead zones, not to mention destroying local artisanal economies uncovering an encroaching neocolonialism. Produced over three years with interviews and footage from communities on three continents, the film asks if aquaculture is making food systems more sustainable, or is instead an industry predicated on the grabbing of natural resources. It’s the result of a journalistic research project supported by Journalismfund Europe and Internews Earth. Bravo and well done Francesco! Is tree planting always a sustainable initiative? 🌳 I recently discussed this topic with Andrew Hunt, and we came to three conclusions: 🌿 Don't neglect the giants Older trees store significantly more carbon than young forests. Therefore, preserving existing mature forests has a more profound effect on slowing global warming than new tree planting campaigns. For instance, VERDE - Associação para a Conservação Integrada da Natureza in Portugal does an excellent job of conserving our old giant trees. 🌱 Consider the species and diversity of the forest A 2021 study of 174 tree-planting organizations in 74 countries showed that most plant only a few types of trees to help landowners produce food, timber, or firewood. This approach may provide short-term benefits to rural communities, but it's less likely to boost biodiversity or maximize carbon storage to combat climate change. Collaborating with experts and local communities is vital to encourage wildlife and biodiversity and prevent monoculture, which can result in sterile landscapes. 🧑🏼🌾 Involve the local community Local people have strong ties to the forests in their traditional territories and have developed sustainable management practices. They hold ecological knowledge that's been passed down through generations and understand the intricate relationships between various forest species. It ensures a thriving relationship between people and forests, benefiting conservation, social, and economic aspects. #TreePlanting #Reforestation #ClimateAction
Is tree planting always beneficial? Hear Andrew Hunt and Cláudia Pereira Delgado discuss the need to move beyond sustainability and rely on third-party certifications to ensure best social and environmental practices. Aduna Superfoods directly reinvests in the rural communities from which they source, ensuring natural ecosystem planting with local support. This grassroots approach encourages resilience and nurtures local ecosystems. By partnering with organizations like Orgiis Ghana Julius Awaregya, they foster environmental stewardship and empower communities. #Sustainability #Baobab #MakeBaobabFamous #FairWild #WildIngredients
