Our review paper titled “Breaking Barriers: Innovative Approaches for Skin Delivery of RNA Therapeutics” has been accepted in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics! This is the result of a fantastic collaboration between our lab at A*STAR Skin Research Labs A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research and Prof. Matthias G. Wacker 's lab at the NUS Department of Pharmacy, National University of Singapore. A huge thank you to all our co-authors, including Shan Quah, Kamaladasan Kalidasan, Justin Chan, and Gavin Han. RNA therapeutics holds immense potential to revolutionize personalized medicine by providing highly targeted treatments, moving beyond traditional injections to more convenient topical and transdermal methods. However, the skin's lipid-rich stratum corneum poses a significant challenge for drug penetration. Our review explores the latest advancements in passive and active delivery strategies that can overcome this barrier, targeting both local skin conditions and systemic diseases. These innovative approaches not only enhance treatment outcomes but also improve patient quality of life. This June, Rynne et al. produced our striking image of the month. The group, from King’s College London, investigated RNA binding proteins (RBP) of the tristetraprolin family and their role in asthma. 🔍 The importance of the airway epithelium and differences in mRNA expression in those with asthma and without has already been established. mRNA in Boston at the AMM Ascent Meeting's Day 2... There have been spectacular panels discussing the key trends and hurdles to the mRNA field as the pandemic becomes further in the rear-view. My key takeaways so far: Indication Prioritization - Andreas Kuhn (BioNTech) made this point quite elegantly that mRNA is not a panacea. We need to figure out the right applications today and in the future. Analytics - need better (and better defined) analytics to qualify your mRNA. Sadik Kassim (Danaher) made this point well. Jake Becraft (Strand) drove it home saying "lots of people make BAD mRNA..." Delivery (of course) - "We can't expect the LNP to do it all" as said by Ying Tam (Acuitas). Couldn't agree more. Lots of challenges on the road ahead but lots of opportunities also. We need to keep working and keep communicating with the public on these points. #genetherapy #mRNA #biotech
