Five northern European countries - Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Sweden - have forged agreements for cross-border transport and storage of captured CO2, laying the foundations for Europe's CCS infrastructure. These arrangements aim to overcome barriers to a functional CCS market, with Norway's significant storage potential playing a key role. Projects like Northern Lights demonstrate Norway's commitment to CCS. Denmark leads in CCS technology, positioning itself as a hub. Belgium sees CCS as crucial for emissions reduction, while Sweden emphasizes its necessity for climate crisis mitigation. A carbon-negative country is one that removes more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than it emits. This can be achieved through various means such as reforestation, carbon capture technologies, renewable energy adoption, and sustainable land management practices. While no country has achieved complete carbon negativity yet, several are actively working towards it through ambitious climate action plans and policies.

Denmark is an important location for the sustainability agenda across europe due to the easy access to the northern sea which has optimal geology for CO2 storage. Great that we are frontloading with this kind of agreements. An important step towards establishment of the necessary infrastructure!

I find that Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) is one of the most fascinating careers in PGE. It's incredible to fight climate change so directly by repurposing the harmful emissions. This article explains Norway's experience and success in implementing CCUS in seabed formations on the Norwegian continental shelf and their desire to do the same with the North Sea. Crtitics argue that it's only a distraction from the real fight, but we have an obligation to treat both the cause and the symptoms. CCUS is only getting more efficient, but its success must be met by the courage and drive to continue its improvement of our world. https://lnkd.in/gQt_hXwb #PGE301

There will be no carbon capture and storage (CCS) without public and political support. Therefore, it was a pleasure to welcome a German delegation with representatives from industry, government, media and NGOs to discuss CCS and public perception at CONCITO. Together with Karsten Capion I had the pleasure to present our take on CCS and some key learnings from the implementation of the technology in Denmark. Thanks to Nina Skaarup for also sharing her experiences from on the geological groundwork and engagement with possible neighbors to onshore CO2-storage. A special thanks to Dr. Beate Baron, Anne-Mette Cheese, Katrine Thomsen, Fabian Liss and Julian Somers for sharing your perspectives in a fireside chat. We look forward to a continued and constructive dialogue across the border on the role CCS in climate policy! In our view CCS will play an important role in parallel with efforts to decarbonize all sectors. But since funding and resources are constrained, we should focus incentives on no-regret and cost-effective projects (which of course will be a moving target). Further, as green electricity will also be a limited resource for decades, green hydrogen and CO2 can be used separately to produce carbon free e-fuels and storing CO2 permanently, to maximize climate benefit.

🎯 To achieve the EU’s 2040 climate target, it will be necessary to capture approximately 280 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2040. Yet, given the current rate of progress, it will be very hard to meet this target. Despite some Member States leading the way to develop CCS projects in the EU, more than two thirds of all countries do not have a clear CCS strategy set into place, nor adequate funding mechanisms to bolster this technology. CCS Europe urges Commissioners to talk to national ministers about the need for industrial decarbonisation and the huge business opportunities that CCS investments will create for industries. 👇 Read our full statement below!
