Announced sustainable aviation fuel projects represent over three billion gallons of annual domestic production capacity in the United States by 2030, surpassing the target set under the US SAF Grand Challenge target, finds a new report from the US U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), reports Christopher Surgenor for GreenAir News. The announced capacity correlates to over 10% of projected US jet fuel demand, over $44 billion of investment and more than 70,000 jobs across the SAF value chain, says the report, which will be presented at #COP29 in Baku on November 21. The biggest barrier to SAF scale-up remains its price, which is currently two to ten times more than fossil jet fuel, says DOE, depending on the feedstock and conversion technology used to produce it. In October, DOE’s Loan Programs Office | U.S. Department of Energy Office announced conditional commitments to issue over $1.4 billion dollars in loan guarantees each to renewable fuels companies Montana Renewables, LLC and Gevo, Inc. The cooperation with aireg - Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. and IMPACT on sustainable aviation is an important step in the direction of decarbonizing aviation. I am convinced that we will see hundreds of SAF plants (if not more) becoming operational in the future, and looking back it will be difficult to comprehend that we were full of doubts regarding availability of SAF in sufficient quantities and within a certain timeline. Yet, as of today we have no reason to be complacent, the SAF crunch is dire reality. Forging new networks across the broader aviation decarbonization value chain will be essential to drive the much-needed progress, and it has never been as important as it is today. On this note I am personally very much looking forward to the cooperation between the two organizations to bridge the gap and jointly develop solutions. Thanks to Melanie Form and Siegfried Knecht for helping to connect the dots. #sustainability #saf #sustainablefinance #sustainableaviationfuel #netzero #renewables #aviationfinance #sustainableaviation

I recently read about the crucial role of collaboration in achieving net-zero carbon emissions in aviation. The World Sustainability Symposium highlights that the transition to renewable energy is a global issue affecting all industries, not just aviation. Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s Senior VP for Sustainability and Chief Economist, emphasizes the need to break free from old ways of thinking. She believes renewable energy should be a top priority across all government departments to find effective solutions. While Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) are a key focus, they are only part of the solution. Other elements, making up about 35% of the industry's path to net zero, are equally important. SAF production is currently lagging, so it's vital to invest broadly and keep an open mind about new technologies. IATA is supporting industry efforts by creating markets—like the upcoming SAF Registry—and developing tools such as CO₂ Connect. They are also updating their sustainability policy and finance roadmaps to provide detailed guidance. Policies need to evolve as technologies advance. Increasing SAF production is essential, which means building more bio-refineries and dedicating a larger share of production to SAF. Investing in renewable energy benefits everyone, not just airlines. Achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 requires urgent and extensive policy support. The World Sustainability Symposium aims to bring together decision-makers from finance, agriculture, technology, policy-making, and aviation to ensure air transport gets its fair share of renewable energy. Collaboration and comprehensive policies are key to making the energy transition a success. By uniting all parties, we can work towards a sustainable future for aviation. #SustainableAviation #NetZero2050 #RenewableEnergy International Air Transport Association (IATA)

I had the pleasure of speaking at Foresight Net Zero Live last week. During my talk, I highlighted a few live examples of Associated British Ports' pivotal role in decarbonising industrial clusters and supporting net zero through: 💨 Energy generation integration with offshore wind and the £35m investment in Project LEEF (Lowestoft Eastern Energy Facility) to extend & upgrade the outer harbour to support up to 10GW of offshore wind farms. 💚 Energy transition with Air Products that will see ABP invest in the Immingham Green Energy Terminal to enable the import of green ammonia and establish a major hydrogen generation site in Immingham; producing zero emission fuels for hard to abate industrial and transport uses. ✈ Carbon capture, utilisation and storage with LanzaTech in Port Talbot where ABP will build new marine infrastructure to facilitate the export of sustainable aviation fuel (produced using captured waste industrial gases) to support decarbonisation of the region and the aviation sector. 👩⚖️ The UK has a legal obligation to be net zero by 2050 🚢 Port infrastructure will be key to delivering this 🤝 Collaboration will be key to delivering that ⬆ #SAF #CCUS #hydrogen
