Things are hotting up in SA's #MVNO space with Vodacom now stating its commitment to the MVNO model. ISPA noted a need for regulatory support for MVNOs earlier in the month: "More needs to be done than a bare obligation in a licence to ensure [the MVNO] spark of competition is nourished." There are currently around 20 active MVNOs in South Africa. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged subscribers who have not yet completed their National Identification Number (NIN) and SIM linkage to act promptly before the impending disconnection of unlinked lines. As of March 2024, there are approximately 66 million active mobile lines that remain unlinked to NIN, out of a total of 219 million active lines across networks like MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile. Recent disruptions occurred when millions of lines were temporarily barred due to unverified NINs, prompting the NCC to initially reverse its decision and extend the compliance period. However, with the deadline now expired, disconnections are set to begin. NCC officials have indicated that there are no plans for further extensions. Subscribers have expressed frustration with the challenges faced in uploading their details on the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) portal. Adeolu Ogungbanjo, President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, highlighted the technical difficulties hindering timely completion of the NIN-SIM linkage process. In a collaborative effort, the NIMC and NCC had previously strengthened their partnership to facilitate this process through public awareness campaigns and stakeholder training. Financial results from early 2024 revealed that MTN Nigeria and Airtel Africa collectively barred 13.5 million lines due to non-compliance with the NIN-SIM linkage directive. #NCC #Nigeria #Telecommunications #NINSIMLinkage #MTN

What exactly was MTN thinking? 🤔 Waking up on Sunday morning to find out that both my husband's and my phone lines were barred due to an alleged failure to link our NIN was beyond frustrating. The inability to make or receive calls during such times is troublesome, although we were fortunate to still communicate via WhatsApp calls. But not everyone has that luxury. As the hours passed into Monday morning with our lines still blocked, the thought of spending valuable time at an MTN office was worrisome, so I was still unable to make calls. Fortunately, by evening, our lines were restored, following some unfortunate incidents at the MTN offices, precisely the destruction of their property and the intervention of the NCC. This experience raises the question: What was MTN really thinking? In the midst of economic challenges, unexpected inconveniences can trigger strong reactions from the public. Vodacom activated 10 new base station sites this week, including two 5G and eight 4G LTE sites, to connect people in Malamulele, Polokwane, Lebowakgomo, Burgersfort and Hoedspruit who previously had no connectivity to the Digital Economy. A new era of digital inclusion has been ushered in by this deployment, which connects residents of rural areas, villages, and townships to the newest and fastest network technologies.   Omphile Mosegedi, Executive Head for Operations for the Vodacom Limpopo region, commented: “We have embarked on a crucial network investment drive in our province as part of our commitment to address coverage gaps in townships and deep rural areas of the province. We have set our sights on removing barriers and enabling citizens of the province in rural and township areas to have the same network experience as those who reside in urban areas. This means that we'll be bringing faster data services to tens of thousands of people who currently only have voice services and EDGE data services.
