Seagrass & Such Series: A Closer Look- Sea Otters as a Keystone Species in Kelp Forests. Sea otters were previously hunted by humans and by the 1900’s this lead to a significant drop in their population. Following protection measures, hunting declined and sea otters numbers began to increase once again. Scientists were able to observe their reintroduction to their kelp forest habitat and how their return affected their surrounding environment. The number of sea otters plummeted again in the 1900’s, this is believed to be due to being hunted by orcas. Their usual prey of sea lions and whales became scarce due to overfishing therefore they turned to the sea otter population for sustenance. Alongside the once again decline in number of sea otters, sea urchins were left unchecked, meaning they were able to rapidly reproduce, biting through the holdfast or roots of the kelp. Whilst conducting research in Alaska, the scientist James Estes confirmed that sea otters are a keystone species. Their role in their environment is crucial in ensuring their habitat is balanced, one species not outcompeting another. https://bit.ly/49jBouf Daniel Terrell / Pexels #seagrassseries #ocean #oceanconservation #marinebiology #oceanecosystems #kelpforests #marinehabitats #seaotters

Have you heard of persistence hunting? It perfectly illustrates how resilience is hardwired into human nature. It is a way ancient humans hunted deer by running after the deer for hours until it eventually passed out from exhaustion and they would take the animal. It sounds crazy that humans could outrun a deer but there is a real biological reason for it. It has to do with cooling. A mammal needs to maintain a consistent body temperature or else bad things happen. So when we get cold, we shiver. When we get hot, we rest and breathe. Deer sprint and then rest. They can do this repeatedly, but after a few hours of running they lose the ability to recover enough to overcome the heat their sprinting has created and they collapse. But humans have the most efficient cooling system of any mammal. That means we can run for a very long time while staying cool. So through a combination of tracking and endurance, ancient humans chased deer to death. What I love about the legend of this ancient act is that I feel it is a perfect allegory for all human acts. We may feel weak, tired, and lost, but we keep going. Because we must.

The paper I want to focus on in this week examines the ancestor of humanity's best friend: wolves. In this case, it looks at a very unique wolf population. Whoever said there are no Pleasant Wolves was wrong. A wolf population (Canis lupus) studied by Errikson et al. (2024) on Pleasant Island in Alaska has defied the notion that wolves need ungulate prey like deer to survive. These canines thrive by hunting sea otters and other edible resources in their marine habitat. Errikson and his team confirmed through DNA barcoding that these unique wolves subsist solely on the island's resources. This population, established only in the past decade by a few adult wolves, is at risk of extinction. However, if they survive (albeit surviving means here for a few million years), it's not hard to imagine their progeny acquiring marine adaptations similar to those of their current prey, the sea otters. Stories like this are common in evolution and often result in remarkable adaptations. In extreme cases, such evolutionary paths can lead to completely marine mammals like dolphins and whales. Eriksson et al. 2024: "The origin, connectivity, and individual specialization of island wolves after deer extirpation."

Three key learnings from the majestic Octopus #Camouflage: Octopuses are renowned for their incredible camouflage abilities, achieved through rapid changes in color and texture. This skill not only helps them avoid predators but also aids in hunting by allowing them to blend seamlessly into their surroundings, showcasing their adaptability in various marine habitats. Problem-solving: Octopuses exhibit remarkable intelligence and problem-solving skills, as evidenced by their ability to navigate mazes, manipulate objects like jars to access food, and even use tools found in their environment. Their adeptness at finding innovative solutions underscores their capacity to adapt and thrive in challenging situations. #Resourcefulness: Octopuses display impressive resourcefulness by creatively utilizing elements from their environment. They construct shelters from shells and rocks, demonstrating their ability to repurpose materials for protection. Additionally, their diverse hunting techniques, from mimicry to ambush #strategies, highlight their adaptability and opportunistic nature in obtaining food sources. #OctopusInsights #underwaterphotographyWonders #MarineIntelligence #OceanicAdaptability

Who's heard of the big bad wolf? 🐺 Fairytales, movies and media have portrayed wolves as vicious, malicious, bloodthirsty beasts. But in reality its humans who are the threat, hunting wolves to - or near - extinction for generations. Wolves are vital for healthy ecosystems - they keep prey numbers in check which in turn allows more tree saplings to grow and forests to be healthier. Angry mobs with flaming torches and pitchforks may no longer be a threat to wolves, but the EU is using an equally as deadly technique to attack wolves... In September, they voted to downgrade wolves' protection status (with no scientific grounding or public consultation) opening the doors to more persecution and human-led hunts. They will convene to set this in stone at the Bern Convention in December. ✍️ Sign the petition to stop wolf hunting in Europe 🎥 And watch the beautiful Wolf Within documentary on WaterBear Network, in collaboration with The European Nature Trust to hear from communities who have learnt to coexist with wolves. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e3-tFfNG ⬅️ 📸 The Wolf Within Premiere at Curzon Bloomsbury, London #Wolves #WolfWithin #WaterBear #Conservation

The American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) is one of the largest migratory birds found in North America. They breed in the northern parts of North America, including Canada, and migrate south to warmer areas for the winter. Some populations migrate as far south as Central America. American white pelicans are large birds with a wingspan up to 2.75 meters. They have white plumage overall, with black wingtips that are visible when they are flying. They are primarily found in freshwater habitats, including lakes, marshes, and rivers, particularly in the central and western parts of North America. They prefer shallow water bodies where they can forage for fish. American white pelicans primarily feed on fish. They often forage in groups, using cooperative hunting strategies to corral fish into shallow water where they can easily scoop them up with their bills.
