Seagrass & Such Series: A Closer Look- Sea Otters as a Keystone Species in Kelp Forests. Sea otters were previously hunted by humans and by the 1900’s this lead to a significant drop in their population. Following protection measures, hunting declined and sea otters numbers began to increase once again. Scientists were able to observe their reintroduction to their kelp forest habitat and how their return affected their surrounding environment. The number of sea otters plummeted again in the 1900’s, this is believed to be due to being hunted by orcas. Their usual prey of sea lions and whales became scarce due to overfishing therefore they turned to the sea otter population for sustenance. Alongside the once again decline in number of sea otters, sea urchins were left unchecked, meaning they were able to rapidly reproduce, biting through the holdfast or roots of the kelp. Whilst conducting research in Alaska, the scientist James Estes confirmed that sea otters are a keystone species. Have you heard of persistence hunting? It perfectly illustrates how resilience is hardwired into human nature. It is a way ancient humans hunted deer by running after the deer for hours until it eventually passed out from exhaustion and they would take the animal. It sounds crazy that humans could outrun a deer but there is a real biological reason for it. It has to do with cooling. A mammal needs to maintain a consistent body temperature or else bad things happen. So when we get cold, we shiver. When we get hot, we rest and breathe. Deer sprint and then rest. They can do this repeatedly, but after a few hours of running they lose the ability to recover enough to overcome the heat their sprinting has created and they collapse. But humans have the most efficient cooling system of any mammal. That means we can run for a very long time while staying cool. So through a combination of tracking and endurance, ancient humans chased deer to death. What I love about the legend of this ancient act is that I feel it is a perfect allegory for all human acts. We may feel weak, tired, and lost, but we keep going. Because we must.

Who's heard of the big bad wolf? 🐺 Fairytales, movies and media have portrayed wolves as vicious, malicious, bloodthirsty beasts. But in reality its humans who are the threat, hunting wolves to - or near - extinction for generations. Wolves are vital for healthy ecosystems - they keep prey numbers in check which in turn allows more tree saplings to grow and forests to be healthier. Angry mobs with flaming torches and pitchforks may no longer be a threat to wolves, but the EU is using an equally as deadly technique to attack wolves... In September, they voted to downgrade wolves' protection status (with no scientific grounding or public consultation) opening the doors to more persecution and human-led hunts. They breed in the northern parts of North America, including Canada, and migrate south to warmer areas for the winter. Some populations migrate as far south as Central America. American white pelicans are large birds with a wingspan up to 2.75 meters. They have white plumage overall, with black wingtips that are visible when they are flying. They are primarily found in freshwater habitats, including lakes, marshes, and rivers, particularly in the central and western parts of North America. They prefer shallow water bodies where they can forage for fish. American white pelicans primarily feed on fish. They often forage in groups, using cooperative hunting strategies to corral fish into shallow water where they can easily scoop them up with their bills.
