Agreed. Sometimes people step away to care for themselves or a loved one. The value lies in seeing the compassion this person had to have to put themselves or loved ones first. This tells you a lot about a person and level of sacrifice and commitment they are willing to endure due to their loyalty to family or to their own health. When people do emerge from these pauses or gaps, they return with translatable lessons and relatable experiences. I hope that as we move forward collectively changing the landscape of the culture of work norms, we change this. I hope hiring managers get curious about those gaps and pauses and what it can tell them about the PERSON they are hiring. Sometimes, I believe, there is more skillset in being a good human.
In case you needed a reminder today, your career break or pause is valid. Career journeys are seldom linear — let's normalize that. 💙
