In a call for an alliance with the new EU institutions, our #100daysEU campaign presents cities' key priorities for a better Europe 🌟 👉 If Mayors ruled the EU, they would match local needs with sufficient public investments 💶 For example, the city of Ajuntament de Sant Boi de Llobregat has used EU funds to support its commitment to nature conservation, sustainable urban planning, and innovative environmental practices 🌍 The city administration - shortlisted for the EU Green Leaf Award - has created 40 hectares of urban green spaces, demonstrating its drive to achieve the goals of the #NatureRestorationLaw. They have also implemented a #ClimateAdaptation Plan, and developed eight natural heat shelters to mitigate heat effects. By 2050, Sant Boi aims to be a city where greenery and sustainability are fully interlinked in urban life. However, to follow this model, cities across Europe require longer-term, direct EU investments to fully implement the green transition and build a better future for everyone. And to ensure nature restoration at local level, cities require dedicated funding, not the complex mix of EU funding streams that currently exist. Learn more about Sant Boi's green actions ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eRD9ZR7R #LocalFutureEU #TeamLocalEurope #EUbudget European Commission #RestoreNature #EUGreenDeal

On Friday, I joined a lively virtual chat, 'The Urban Nexus Edition,' hosted by SA Cities Network, where I presented alongside other leaders and eco-experts. Together with other attendees we brainstormed how South African cities can develop in harmony with nature. It was an great experience, with many inspiring ideas and innovative approaches emphasizing how we can create biodiverse cities for everyone. My co-speakers' passion for their work was truly infectious, making it a memorable and thought-provoking event. Background: The SA Cities Network hosts regular "Cities' Lunchtime Chats" to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing among urban professionals and organizations. In this edition, a diverse panel discussed urban development, biodiversity, and ways to ensure a sustainable future for South African cities. Thanks to my co-presenters: Thandeka Mlaza-Lloyd (Acting Director: Integrated Community-based Planning in Group Strategy Policy Coordination and Relations at City of Johannesburg), Adrie Fourie (Head of Department: Sustainable Cities and Research at Solid Green Consulting), and Vhalinavho Khavhagali (Country Director: South Africa at the International Union for Conservation Of Nature - IUCN). Thanks also to all who attended and for the many questions and dialogue that ensued! Thanks also to all others who attended or participated!" When nature and economy connect! 🌱 Good news for companies in the Waasland port in Antwerp. The businesses can now use the 272 hectares of unused "residual land" to further develop their sites. Until recently, this wasn't possible due to the overlap with the Birds Directive area. The Environmental Impact Assessment plan (EIA plan) with Maatschappij Linkerscheldeoever (MLSO) provided the solution! How? Through natural compensation outside the port in Kallo and Sint-Gillis-Waas. More details on ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eeAxBPTe. #natureconservation #portdevelopment

🌟 More about Nature Based Solutions! We are collaborating with the URWAN - Urban Regenerative Water Avant-garde(N) Project, co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg Euro-MED Programme. 🌍💧 We are providing support to MedCities / MedCités, along with the project partners and pilot initiatives, to develop Work Package 4 (WP4): the URWAN Amplification Strategy. This project is all about demonstrating the transformative power of collaboration to build resilient and sustainable urban environments. By leveraging nature-based solutions (NBS), we aim to tackle climate change and water scarcity with innovative, participatory approaches. https://lnkd.in/exN2FW3G 💡 What is WP4 about? It focuses on: -> Engaging policymakers and stakeholders in analyzing barriers to NBS implementation. -> Co-creating solutions to overcome these barriers, informed by feedback from beneficiaries. -> Amplifying and mainstreaming the project's outcomes while integrating economic, social, and cultural insights to support decision-making at the governance level. 🎯 We are contributing to the development of key tools by: -> Interviewing key pilot cities (Roma, Ptuj, Ferla, Cuba, Sarajevo and Larnaca) and frontrunner cities (Barcelona, Cascais) to extract main lessons learned, barriers and enablers to allow a system integration of NBSs -> Preparing the first Living lab methodology in Ptuj -> Information exchange systems about data collection on NBSs in the project ->Identifying Training needs for the Urwan pilot cities This is a unique opportunity to explore innovative, nature-driven solutions for urban challenges while fostering collective action. 🌱 👉 Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this exciting journey to build sustainable and adaptive urban futures! #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions #Sustainability #Collaboration #URWAN #WEandB

Green Urban Spaces: Solutions for Climate Resilience 🌿 🌍 Why Nature-Based Solutions? Climate change is creating increasingly serious challenges in urban areas, such as heat island effects, prolonged droughts, and more frequent summer wildfires. The INFIRE project addresses these challenges by implementing nature-based solutions that contribute to more resilient, sustainable, and healthier cities. 🔧 REGEA and the Pilot Project in Croatia As the project coordinator, REGEA oversees the implementation of pilot activities in both Croatia and Portugal. In Croatia, a biosolar roof is being installed on the building of the Karlovac City Library. This innovative solution combines renewable energy technologies with green surfaces, reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing the quality of urban living. 🌱 What’s Happening in Portugal? In the pilot municipalities of Setúbal, Sesimbra, and Palmela, the following activities are underway: ▪️Development of green schoolyards for children and young people ▪️Creation of green corridors to connect urban green spaces ▪️Tree planting and establishment of community gardens as gathering spaces for residents 🔧 What are the Goals of the INFIRE Project? Mitigating the heat island effect 🌡️ Enhancing biodiversity and improving ecosystem quality 🌳 Creating accessible and functional green spaces for all community members 👩👩👧👦 📍 Beyond implementation, the project provides support to public institutions for more effective planning and financing of climate adaptation measures. #interregeuromed #infireproject #enegytransition

Just read in The Planner that Lichfields are warning that 'restricting second homes and short-term lets in Wales could constrain the growth of the tourism sector'... well, YES, That's the point!!! Unchecked tourism and perpetual growth in visitor numbers brings with it increased demand for local housing and more holiday accommodation, distorting the local housing market and displacing local families. Maybe if we stop relying on volatile, seasonal tourism jobs we can restructure our economy around renewable energy, home retrofit and low carbon technology, that will earn higher salaries and sustain the economy all year round...
