Leadership for Change: Lessons from Great Women Leaders in Africa Hello Leaders and Changemakers, 😃, The #GenZ protest in Kenya has highlighted a significant voice in the movement: the current Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Madam Faith Odhiambo. She has been instrumental in the fight, assisting in the release of some unlawfully detained protesters. During her tenure, many of us have come to appreciate the invaluable work of the LSK for the common citizen. When we think about leadership, it's crucial to recognize the incredible contributions of women leaders in Africa. Their resilience, vision, and dedication provide powerful lessons for anyone looking to lead change effectively. Here are some key takeaways from these inspiring figures: 1. Embrace Resilience Women like Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the first female president of Liberia, show us the power of resilience. Leading a nation through post-war recovery, she demonstrated that overcoming adversity is essential for transformative leadership. 2. Prioritize Education Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria's former Finance Minister and the first woman to lead the World Trade Organization, emphasizes the importance of education. Her journey underscores how knowledge and continuous learning can drive impactful change. 3. Foster Community and Collaboration Graça Machel, a renowned humanitarian and former first lady of both Mozambique and South Africa, teaches us the value of building strong communities. Her advocacy work highlights the importance of collaboration and collective effort in achieving sustainable progress. 4. Lead with Empathy Our very own, Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, led with profound empathy for both people and the environment. Her Green Belt Movement, which focused on environmental conservation and women's rights, reminds us that empathetic leadership can create lasting impact. 5. Innovate and Adapt Ashish J. Thakkar, although not a woman, has been influenced by African women leaders in his entrepreneurial journey. His ability to innovate and adapt, inspired by the dynamic leadership around him, shows that learning from diverse leaders can enrich our own leadership styles. These women leaders inspire us to lead with resilience, prioritize education, foster community, lead with empathy, and continuously innovate. Let's celebrate their achievements and reflect on how we can incorporate these lessons into our own leadership journeys. What lessons have you learned from great women leaders? The recent appointment of 37-year-old economist Bogolo Joy Kenewendo as Botswana’s Minister of Mines marks the second time a young woman has been appointed to a ministerial position in the country. This follows the groundbreaking appointment of 26-year-old Lesego Chombo as Minister of Youth and Gender, highlighting Botswana’s bold commitment to empowering young women leaders. These appointments send a powerful message about the importance of prioritising expertise, vision, and inclusivity over age. By entrusting young women with significant ministerial roles, Botswana is setting an inspiring example for other African nations, including Ghana, demonstrating that age and gender need not limit one’s capacity to lead and drive change. These visionary appointments showcase the positive impact young leaders can have, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to governance. It’s precisely the kind of progress we hope to see more of across Africa—young women stepping confidently into leadership roles and shaping a more inclusive and dynamic future for the continent.

So, I’ll be serving as a judge for this year’s Standard Bank Top Women™️ Awards 🤩. The category we are sponsoring at RS South Africa is Top Women Business in Construction, Infrastructure, Resources & Mining 2024. This category holds special significance, as it aligns with our commitment to celebrating women who are making a lasting impact in industries critical to the development of society. These awards not only highlight individual achievements but also underscore the progress we are making towards gender equity and sustainability in leadership. As a Millennial, I’m particularly inspired by the values driving my generation’s approach to work, leadership, and consumption. Fast fashion and mass production may still dominate our shops and clothing stores, but more of us are steering our decisions towards companies that reflect our values. This movement is transforming how we think about both consumption and the future of the industries that shape our world. This shift isn’t just a fleeting trend. It has real implications for our planet, society, and the industrial sectors we serve. Millennials are blending their values with their choices—whether in investments, careers, or purchasing decisions. We are showing that profitability and purpose can indeed go hand in hand. As a judge for the Standard Bank Top Women Awards, I’m excited to see how women leaders in sectors like construction, infrastructure, and mining are breaking barriers and transforming traditionally male-dominated industries. At RS, we are committed to promoting ethical leadership and driving sustainability in every aspect of what we do. Our sponsorship of this category reflects our belief that investing in women who are reshaping industries is key to building a better future. I look forward to collaborating with my fellow judges and celebrating the achievements of these trailblazing women who are leading the way towards a more inclusive and sustainable world. Together, we are shaping the future of business—one that aligns with the values that matter most to us.
