About us

Debswana is the largest private sector employer in Botswana, with more than 4 000 staff members. These are mainly found on mining sites, along with just over 5 000 fixed-term contractors and a small staff complement at the Debswana Corporate Centre in Gaborone, Botswana’s capital. Diamond mining operations are located at Orapa, Letlhakane, Damtshaa (OLDM) and Jwaneng. These four mines have contributed significantly to the economic growth of Botswana, as well as producing revenues responsible for lifting the country from one of Africa’s least developed to an international development success story. Botswana is now a middle-income country independent in means as well as name.Debswana is a key player in the national economy of Botswana.

  • Debswana and Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital discuss opportunities for Partnership and collaboration in healthcare Services Debswana’s commitment to partnership and collaboration for delivery of quality health care remains unshaken. As the largest private contributor in the health sector, with two District hospitals providing quality care for employees , business partners and the communities, Debswana firmly believes in good quality healthcare to promote thriving communities in its areas of operations. The two entities recently met to discuss collaboration opportunities. In his welcome remarks Mr Cliford Seleka ( Hospital Commissioning Manager) highlighted that the 450 bed Hospital is the largest in the country and aspires to be a state of exellence hospital with variety of specialised services. Responding to the call Dr Kegomoditswe Biki Maphane ( Debswana Health Principal ) emphasised that partnership and collaboration is very paramount in delivering quality health services. Dr Maphane further informed the delegates that one of Debswana’s strategic pillars is partnering for thriving communities, which underpins why is it important to hold such an engagement to unearth opportunities for collaboration. In conclusion, Dr Maphane highlighted opportunities for partnership and collaboration in areas of Tele- medicine, Training and development, Occupational health and skill sharing as strategic areas for promoting Universal Health Coverage in Boteti and Jwaneng.

  • JWANENG MINE SOWS SEEDS OF CHANGE IN MOKHOMMA Through the Ambassadors for Good initiative, Jwaneng Mine employees in partnership with Stepping Stones International, and Safety and Sustainable Development Department (S&SD) launched a behavior change program at Mokhomma Village, targeting Upper Primary School leaners and out-of-school youth. Young girls learned about body changes and received starter packs of reusable sanitary pads, while the rest of the youth gained life skills and health resources. Positive changes are already evident, with a mini-graduation planned to celebrate related achievements. The team also donated 35 trees to the village, symbolizing growth and sustainability. Debswana Jwaneng Mine is making a lasting impact within and beyond its Communities Of Influence.

This included an emphasis on our unwavering commitment to safety and operational excellence, as well as our continued focus on delivering value through consistent production targets. The engagement reaffirmed Debswana’s alignment with national priorities, particularly in advancing citizen economic empowerment and contributing to the broader Vision 2036 goals. Jwaneng Mine and Absa Bank have launched a tree-planting initiative in Jwaneng town and surrounding areas, aiming to plant 5,500 trees in celebration of Debswana’s 55th anniversary. This project, themed “Preservation of the Ozone Layer,” reflects Debswana's commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles. The newly planted trees will help absorb harmful substances and enhance local green spaces, improving the environment for future generations. Jwaneng Mine's General Manager highlighted the importance of sustainable community projects, while Absa Bank's Acting Managing Director Tebogo Giddie highlighted climate action as a central focus of their sustainability strategy. The project will encompass the districts of Jwaneng, Moshupa, Kanye, Letlhakeng, and Mabutsane, beginning with the planting of shade and fruit trees in Raphalane ward.
