Happy World Press Freedom Day 2024! As a climate leader, I extend my deepest gratitude to journalists worldwide. Your work in bringing environmental issues to the forefront is invaluable. Last July, we trained 35 young journalists in climate science and storytelling, empowering them to narrate our planet's most pressing stories. This year's theme for World Press Freedom Day is "A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis." It highlights the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental challenges Today, I urge you all to continue this momentum. Let's increase our coverage on climate change, share more stories of impact, and inspire action. Your voice is crucial in shaping a sustainable future for all. #WorldPressFreedomDay #ClimateChange #SustainableFuture

Leading the Oxford Climate Journalism Network, I am always delighted and proud to talk about the sheer span of global talent and experience we gather with every cohort of journalists. It is a reflection of a fantastic and dedicated team, our ability to lead conversations - across newsroom leaders and journalists, on issues ranging from extreme heat to greenwashing and to bring world class research to the conversation around climate, audiences and critical policy/industry voices. And yes, call me repetitive but every story is a climate story. #climate #journalism #climateaction

On this World Press Freedom Day 2024, under the theme "A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis," it's imperative to recognize the critical role journalists play. The climate and biodiversity crises are not just environmental issues; they affect the lives of billions worldwide. The stories of upheaval and loss resulting from these crises deserve to be known and shared, even if they're not easy to watch. Exposing the crisis is the first step to finding solutions. Journalists work tirelessly on the frontlines of our collective fight for a healthier planet and livable lives. Their courage and perseverance enable us to understand what's happening across the globe. They bring attention to environmental degradation, climate disasters, and their impacts on communities. Their work empowers us to take action and demand accountability from those in power. 🌍 How can journalism contribute to addressing the world's most pressing environmental issues while also inspiring people? AFP and The Conversation France collaborated to investigate the nine planetary boundaries that are critical to humanity's survival. This project was funded by the Solutions Journalism Accelerator and it includes creating podcasts and articles that helped people understand these complex issues. Their work focused on real-world examples from the Global South, demonstrating how people are addressing climate and biodiversity challenges. World Press Freedom Day: Nurturing Climate Awareness and Literacy Today, on World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate the crucial role of journalism and the freedom of expression. But beyond the headlines, there lies an equally important mission: raising awareness about climate change and promoting literacy on this topic. In our interconnected world, where information flows through social media channels, we face a dual challenge. The Complexity of Climate Change: Climate change is intricate, with various interconnected factors. As writers, our task is to convey this complexity without oversimplifying it. For instance, the carbon footprint isn’t a single number that can be easily compared. It results from a combination of consumption patterns, energy sources, and lifestyle choices. Press and Social Media: Allies or Adversaries? Press freedom and social media coexist. Independent journalists and scientists play a crucial role in separating facts from misinformation. Meanwhile, digital content creators on social platforms amplify climate messages. However, we must tread carefully. How can we ensure a clear distinction between activist-driven content and reliable media? How do we counter climate disinformation? The Way Forward: -Media Literacy: Equipping people with tools to verify sources and discern truth. -Collaboration: Digital creators and traditional media can join forces. -Platform Responsibility: Social media giants must combat climate misinformation. -Synergy: Scientists, creators, and platforms can elevate authoritative climate information. Let’s write a narrative that empowers, educates, and inspires action. #DiaMundialDeLaLibertadDePrensa

It is interesting how frequently wrong rational assessments of the future are compared with remote viewing predictions. Back in the early 1970s, when I was a member of the MIT-Secretary of Defense Study Group on innovation, technology and the Future, and the Smithsonian Institution Discussions Group on Innovation, Technology, and the Future, one of the major discussions was how humanity would deal with over-population and lack of resources that would result. We barely mentioned climate change. As this fact-based article describes over-population is not, in fact, going to be a major issue, and climate change is an oncoming disaster.
It’s time to stop arguing over the population slowdown and start adapting to it

🌍 An Eye-Opening Session on Climate Storytelling 🌍 Today, I had an eye-opening experience attending a session on Climate Storytelling, facilitated by Joi Lee. It struck me how climate change remains the biggest story journalism has yet to successfully tell. Joi shared many valuable insights on storytelling for a new world, highlighting that 98% of environmental stories are framed negatively and that 55.7% of youth believe "humanity is doomed." This underscores the need for diversity in climate stories and a focus on solutions framing. The role of data in storytelling was also fascinating, showing how we can shift the narrative towards hope and action. Excited to incorporate these approaches in future climate communications! 🌱 #ClimateStorytelling #SolutionsJournalism #ClimateAction #SustainableFuture #StorytellingForChange
