The Weddell Sea is an extraordinary and remote expanse of the Southern Ocean, standing as one of the most pristine and untouched environments on Earth. Located off the eastern coast of Antarctica, this vast sea is a marvel of nature, characterised by its crystal-clear waters and colossal, otherworldly icebergs that drift silently across the horizon. The sheer isolation of the Weddell Sea has allowed it to remain one of the least disturbed ecosystems, making it a haven for an incredible array of wildlife. Here, you'll find Weddell seals basking on the ice, colonies of Adelie and emperor penguins braving the frigid conditions, and various whale species, including orcas and humpbacks, navigating its icy waters. The Weddell Sea is also steeped in the dramatic history of polar exploration. It played a pivotal role in the legendary and harrowing expedition of Sir Ernest Shackleton, whose ship, the Endurance, was famously trapped and crushed by the sea ice in 1915. The story of Shackleton's leadership and the survival of his crew remains one of the most inspiring tales of human endurance and resilience. Beyond its historical significance, the Weddell Sea offers a glimpse into the raw, untamed beauty of our planet. The vast, icy landscapes create a surreal and almost otherworldly atmosphere, where the silence is broken only by the sound of cracking ice and the distant calls of seabirds. For scientists and adventurers alike, the Weddell Sea is a place of wonder and discovery, representing one of the last frontiers of truly wild and uncharted territory on Earth. Whether viewed from the deck of a ship or from above in a helicopter, the Weddell Sea leaves an indelible impression, reminding us of the planet's awe-inspiring power and the delicate balance of its ecosystems. *Embarking on a month long journey to Antarctica and Amazon Rainforest*When we - five friends with a shared passion for exploring exotic locations on this planet, preferably self-driving - formed our group ‘Bhraman’ in 2013, little did we know that it would take us to the Last Place on Earth too. Having done road trips in Ladakh, Zanskar, Spiti, New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, Iceland, US west coast, and the Nova Scotia region on the east coast of Canada, it is a natural progression. It was a big setback to lose one of our group to a freak accident in May’23 but our spirits didn’t wane. We had already committed ourselves in Feb’23 to a journey to The Last Place on Earth – the most forbidding and the planet’s highest, driest, windiest, coldest, and iciest continent. So, four of us in Bhraman group and five other friends – a team of nine not-so-young ranging from 45 to 65 years - are embarking on a month long trip to Antarctica, starting tomorrow. On the way, we would spend 8-9 days in Brazil, in the middle of Amazon Rainforest - the largest tropical rainforest on our planet with richest biodiversity, and considered the Lungs of the Earth. I guess two more in this travelling group are well known to you - Tapan Sarkar & Rajnish Tripathi. We would explore the Antarctic Peninsula region, starting from the South Shetland Islands and cross 66 degrees South latitude which is the Antarctic Circle and considered to be a major frontier for any traveller. We do expect to set foot ashore every day of this exotic 10-day exploration of the Antarctic Peninsula and the Antarctica mainland, to get a closer look at the wildlife comprising a variety of penguins, seals, birds and other aquatic creatures. I find it amazing that the area we would be exploring with this ship has been known to man for only about 200 years. The Antarctic Peninsula was sighted for the first time in 1829 and this is the region where we would be spending all 11 days of our time in Antarctica. The fact that only about 800k have gone to Antarctica in the entire human history – compared to more than 8 million to the Arctic every year - is an indicator of the difficulty quotient of journeying there. Just about 700 attempt to breach the Antarctic Circle every year. Our group of nine would be the biggest contingent from India to do this. And when we do, we would definitely fly the tricolour, proudly. It would take us 13 different flights to complete this sojourn across two continents we have never visited before. We will carry your good wishes with us. We would probably need them more than ever before. It is a journey of self-discovery too. After this, what? Well, a lot remains to be done.Too much to do, too little time. My advice to younger folks - start exploring early in life 😀

A new paper from my PhD, co-authored with Edward Huijbens, has just been published open access in Tourism Geographies! 🐧 🔍 In this paper, we explore the ongoing development of products, activities, and experiences in the rapidly expanding Antarctic tourism industry and their potential implications for the production of Antarctic places (and for the industry’s depiction of tourists as Antarctic ambassadors). Informed by theories of place and placelessness, we identify three particular place framings informed by Antarctic tourism diversification: the compression of time and space, the detachment of Antarctica from Earth, and the progressive consumption of wilderness through luxury and comfort. We argue that these dynamics may contribute to a detachment from the ways in which Antarctic places are situationally and materially assembled, leading to the abstraction, simplification, and obfuscation of socio-material relations making for a place. The possible consequence is the transformation of the Antarctic into a placeless space of consumption, a spectacularized experience to be consumed regardless of the very materialities making for the frozen continent and its surrounding waters. ❄️ Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eRq84dUh #AntarcticTourism #TourismDiversification #TourismGeographies #Antarctica #TourismGeographies ProAct - Proactive Management of Antarctic Tourism
