Crisis, Career Crises Series. Episode 4. Previously, we discussed the stages of a career and the two varieties of career crises. In this episode, let's delve into the second variety of career crises, focusing specifically on the Crisis of educational and vocational guidance (2.1). Do you remember when you were in school, perhaps in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade, facing the dilemma of choosing a professional field? Maybe your parents were involved in the decision-making process, weighing the pros and cons of different options, or perhaps there was limited choice due to family business considerations. For example, in my case: I attended a Junior School of Arts, but my high school majors were in Maths and Physics (a prerequisite for Economics). However, my family had envisioned a career in medicine for me, given that we had several doctors in the family. If you find yourself nodding along, you've likely experienced 2.1. Crisis of educational and vocational guidance. What does this crisis entail? It often emerges before completing school education, presenting the challenge of choosing a path for vocational education or training. Back then, proper testing or assessments to identify economic sectors, interests, motivators, and career preferences weren't readily available to guide future vocational decisions. Do you recall how you navigated that decision-making process? How did you make your choice? Please share your experience. #careerdevelopment #careerstages #ProfessionalEvolution #CareerPlanning #ProfessionalGrowth #sustainablecareer #careers

Why transitioning from #academia to industry after a #PhD? For me, one of the main drivers is realizing how much #research is fueled by guilt. And guilt, in turn, is leveraged to extract free labor from early-career researchers. Guilt-tripping can happen if/when: 🏄♀️ You express the desire to retain hobbies, a social life, or even just a healthy sleep schedule, because research is 24/7 🤑 You need to take on a second job or extra teaching hours to make ends meet, because God forbid you might be distracted by trivial things like rent and groceries ⛔ You refuse to take on unpaid assignments and projects, because research is a calling, not a #job 🚀 You decide to leave and plan accordingly, because research is pain and if you can’t take it you’re undeserving of support So, if you’ve ever heard something along the lines of: ☠ You don’t have what it takes 💣 You’ve lost the spark 👺 You just need to hold on a little bit longer, it’ll be worth it 👾 It is what it is, but it was your choice to enter academia Just know that it's okay to want out. Research might be a calling, but so is well-being and self-improvement - within or without a #University

Graduating from PA school is a monumental achievement—but now comes the BIG question: What’s next? Your career choice should align with your values, goals, and priorities. Here are some key factors to consider as you navigate your path: 💸 Ability to pay off debt: Is this role financially rewarding enough to help you tackle those student loans? 📈 Availability of jobs: Does the specialty or location offer job security and demand? ⏰ Flexible working schedule: How important is control over your time for work-life balance? 🏆 Leadership potential: Are you aiming for roles where you can grow into a leader or mentor? 🔒 Stable, secure future: How stable is the specialty or organization for long-term career growth? 🩺 Supervising physician relationship: How much support and collaboration will you get from your SP? ⚖️ Work/life balance: Will this role allow you to prioritize your personal and family life? 🌍 Working for social change: Do you want a role that aligns with your passion for making a difference in underserved communities? Your career as a PA is more than just a job—it’s a lifestyle. By reflecting on these considerations, you can craft a career path that truly aligns with what matters most to YOU. #PhysicianAssistant #PhysicianAssociate #FuturePA #PAStudent #PALife #PhysicianAssistantLife #AAPA #NCCPA #HealthcareHeroes #PACoaching🩺

Sometimes, we have to break up with the identity of who we thought we'd be. Break up with the ideas we grew up believing Break up with marriage of college equalling a career launching pad Break up with our diploma Our studies Our hard work Our path to success Detached from pieces of our identity We usually are pushed at 18 to go and figure life out Pick a study and invest Invest financially and mentally Dedicate youth to a profession Only to graduate and be left in debt And still young on, what is life? Graduation is only a, so now what moment Years may pass Your degree gets dusty You survive on any job, though some are lucky and fall into a system mirroring their studies or career launching Others fall back as if college never happened. The only reminder of college days now flicker as student loan debt Along the way you've picked up new identities New skills And even new interests What you formed as a college identity no longer is And slowly, the version of yourself you built up... disappears Your survival skills allowed you to learn new talents you made it...You've transitioned careers We need to learn, it's okay to break up with the identity we were married to because reality is, we never truly knew who we'd become at age 18 And even now, we still may be unsure in our next career journey Point being.. Don't be afraid to break up with the outdated version of who you'd thought you'd be. Be open to transitioning careers because you never know the potential you can reach post break up. We all deserve a systems update #career #transition #nextcareer #jobsearching

What problems do you want to solve? This question has been transformative to me. Up until maybe the past 5-7 years, I didn't think about work this way...I was focused on the ever present question of my childhood "what do you want to BE when you grow up?" Being Gen X, this was so common for me and my peers... Honestly this mentality has caused me SO much agony, especially in unemployment. I knew what I wanted to be...but no one else saw things the same way. They didn't want me to be those things. At that point, my value was wrapped up in an end, something to be achieved. The last time I engaged in a full-fledged job search was 2007, the economy was great...but no one wanted me. I looked for seven months, and received only one interview. At that point my wife started looking, interviewed, and was offered a job in about 6 weeks. I got my job offer a week later...but I didn't take it. First...my wife is amazing, and her work was so valuable to her employer...I was (and still am) truly proud of her work! But we would have moved to accept my position, and she just accepted hers. This was the beginning of a spiral that eventually ended with a depression diagnosis...2 years later. I thought my value was what I did (or didn't do)...not who I was. Later, after focusing on my career in teaching at the college level, I had to step away from a coveted tenure-track role (another story for later). This too was devastating, because that job was the dream...to BE something...to BE faculty. So again, I felt lost and without value, because I placed my value in a specific job. I eventually realized that my joy in work was not in a position, but in a pursuit. What problem did I want to solve? I wanted to make change in education, to create more equitable outcomes for those who have been disadvantaged. I enrolled in a PhD program (which is STILL unfinished...but getting closer!) to BE the change. Then...while thinking I was on the pathway to be that change...unexpected unemployment. This time though...I'm prepared. I want to create better educational outcomes for all. Full stop. My value is not in a position, but in a pursuit, encapsulated that simple question: "what problem do I want to solve?" With one child entering college this fall, and another likely taking the same route in two years, I try my best to bring that question to the forefront. If I can help them save the pain I dealt with in the past, they will be that much more successful! So...for those of you lost in a job, or in a job search, would this question help frame things differently for you? If you need to chat, or need support in your search, my DMs are always open.
