Calling all budding Trainee VFX Junior Compositors. Get your reels ready! Two roles up for grabs; https://lnkd.in/ekyYkSzM. Top tips below; Hiring teams at Aardman are busy and compassionate people who love to match individuals with amazing career opportunities. We receive many, many applications, and frequently see basic mistakes that prevent candidates moving to the next stage. Here are some top tips that we hope will help you stand out from the crowd! 1/ Give yourself plenty of time to put together your application. 2/ Read, read, and read again the job description. What is the studio looking for and how well do your skills match the role? 3/ Make sure you tailor your application to the specific studio you are contacting and include any required key skills/level of experience/software knowledge and personal specifications. 4/ Keep all your contact details/reel information and passwords together in one place – your CV! 5/ Always include a covering letter. This gives you the opportunity to support your application and make it personal to you. Include one or two brief paragraphs about yourself and include what you do to support your creativity and passion for animation. 6/ Do your research about the company, people, projects, and policies. Dig deep and find something unique to mention in your covering letter. This shows interest and attention to detail. 7/Many roles require you to have a portfolio and/or reel. Make sure it is well-put together to highlight only your very best work that captures the viewer in the first 10 seconds, and demonstrates your skills, level of experience and personal style. 8/ For CG/VFX specific roles, make sure you include shot breakdowns. Detail your artistry and credit studio production names, “baking” text into a horizontal banner in each shot/sequence. For students who have collaborated on a group graduation film make sure you include your specific shots to showcase your individual skill. 9/ Test your reel link – make sure it works! If it is password protected remember to share the details and include it in all correspondence. 10/Don’t submit your application at the last minute or too near to the closing date as recruiting teams may interview as they go. We discovered a huge gap between 2D artists and Games industry. As last week we were hiring for a 2D artist, we got lots of applications but sadly most of the applicants didn't have gaming oriented portfolios. Their work looked good but for films and comics. It was disheartening to reject so many CV's that looked like talented folks but didn't have relevant experience. I think this is happening majorly at design school level. Over their artists are trained to fill the media industry which has an overflow of 2D artists while games industry that needs lots of 2D artists is running dry. This should be addressed and more folks at college level should target games industry and make relevant portfolios. Edit: a lot of comments are blaming us for shortlisting the portfolios that are closer to what we are looking. Let me try to say this here coz I cannot reply same thing in every comment. We are not looking for a niche or one very specific thing. We are just looking for artists who have "Some" game related work done before. So we know we can take them to where we need them post hiring. Plus when you get a lot of applications you cannot start a dialogue with each candidate to explore. it will take months to hire 1 person this way. And no we cannot take anyone however talented and then train them with no prior games exp coz: A. more often than not they are not willing to make that transition B. we don't have surplus budget or time to do that. Bottomline: Here we are talking about a gap that can be bridged with little efforts from both sides. We know the efforts we do. Here I’m just trying to open a channel to discuss what job seekers can do on their part. Know this that there are candidates bridging this gap and getting hired. I was trying to let other people know what they are missing. Now its up to them if they want to listen and take some action or shrug this dialogue aside and keep blaming the recruiters for trying to get their job done efficiently.

This is because games almost never hires strictly 2D artists? Concept Art gigs are notoriously difficult to find and land. I graduated wanting to do just that and every open position was for 3D or my favorite - a "Generalist" which is code for one artist hired to do whatever isn't 3D and probably overworked and underpaid to do so. If Gaming truly has a desperate need for 2D artists they need to actually advertise that, and then they need someone who is qualified and knows what they are doing to go over those portfolios. There are thousands of us unemployed from Animation currently and many are plenty qualified for such positions. A seasoned art director can tell if someone is suitable for a position based on a portfolio alone as long as the examples are varied and does not need things spelled out for them.
