💡 As the pipeline of wind projects continues to grow, how do we ensure a grid designed for connecting customers with conventional generation can manage and connect variable sources? Blake Clough Consulting joined us last week, on Day 4 of our European Symposium in Aberdeen, to explain exactly how. Blake Clough is a consultancy which focuses on electricity networks, offering support to network operators and regulators and helping developers navigate the challenging grid connection and compliance phases of infrastructure projects. Tom Williams, Power Systems Consultant, presented to our delegates, highlighting: ➡ The potential of interlinked and networked offshore transmission systems. Though this requires developers to be coordinated from the start of a project, studies have shown that benefits may outweigh costs by a ratio of 2 to 1. ➡ Networked offshore systems reduce curtailment, increase reliability and reduce the need for more expensive generators. ➡ An overview of NGESO’s holistic network design, which is preparing to connect 23 GW of offshore wind supply to the UK’s National Grid. ‼️1.8 million tons of CO2 or 3 % of Sweden’s carbon emissions‼️ That is what the cement industry on Gotland is set out to eliminate by 2030 thanks to carbon catching technologies. These new technologies do require substantial amounts on energy supply.⚡️⚡️ As Tomas Kåberger points out: While other countries must invest in renewable energy to replace fossil energy sources, we, in the Nordics, can use our energy mix to help industry remove emissions from their processes and products, building competitiveness for future generations. Wrapping up the year with another milestone accomplished for the ACHIEVE Programme! Following the submission and acceptance of CETO design reports, Carnegie subsidiary CETO Wave Energy Ireland has received a €203,437 (approximately $338,046 AUD) milestone payment under its EuropeWave Project Phase 3 Contract. The accepted design reports provide detailed specifications for key components of the CETO wave energy converter including the power take-off unit, control system, electrical system, mooring and foundation. This marks continued progress towards the first European deployment of CETO at the BiMEP Biscay Marine Energy Platform. The 1st October 2024 will see the deal be completed for the UK government to take control of the National Grid in a move worth £630m. The electricity system operator (ESO) will be taken into public control and be merged with the operation of the gas system to create a new national energy system operator (Neso). The government hopes that the move will help achieve its aim of a net zero energy system by 2030. Neso is also expected to work closely with GB Energy to help connect new generation projects to the grid. The deal for the transfer of the ESO into public ownership had already been agreed by the previous Conservative government due to fears over conflicts of interest in the work that is required to help Britain achieve net zero by 2050. #nationalgrid #infrastructure #energy #netzero #renewables #government

Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has released an update to the 2023 Electricity Statement of Opportunities (ESOO). The ESOO update discusses the need for urgent investments in capacity in the National Electricity Market (NEM) to manage reliability risks. New information has become available since the release of the 2023 ESOO. The new information includes updated commissioning dates for Project EnergyConnect and other network projects including REZs, retirements of gas generators in South Australia, and timing for new generation and storage projects including Snowy 2.0. The updated ESOO highlights particular challenges in NSW, SA and Victoria. AEMO will tender for Interim Reliability Reserves (IRR) to minimize the consumer impact of reliability risks. https://lnkd.in/gxsZBf7r
