The "#ConnectingEurope by Air” side event has been co-organised with Brussels Airport as part of the "Connecting Europe Days 2024", and took place on April 3rd at Brussels Airport’s Skyhall. After the inaugural speeches of the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Croo, and the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Valean, policymakers, as well as leaders from the #aviation and #industry sectors, took part into discussions surrounding the crucial role of aviation in fostering connectivity and sustainability within the #European transport system. With a specific focus on #airports, the purpose has been to underscore their vital importance within Europe’s transport network.  Partecipants in the event also had the opportunity to explore some of the innovative #EU funded aviation projects at the on-site exhibition. SEA Milan Airports participated in this edition of the #ConnectingEurope by Air with two projects: the #eMAGO project and #OLGA while at main venue of the #ConnectingEuropeDays, besides the two already mentioned, it was also present “MXP North Rail Access” project. Sustainable expansion in a changing climate In our earlier session, expert speakers tackled the pressing question: Can airports grow operations while protecting the planet? Alessandro Fidato, Chief Operating Officer at SEA Milan Airports, shared a stark reminder of the climate realities airports now face: Milan has seen a sevenfold increase in days above 35°C, from 30 hours a year to over 200. 🌡️ The panel discussed strategies to expand airport capacity while prioritizing environmental impact and resilience. According to Mr. Jankovec, some of the initiatives to reach #netzeroaviation are: "...the electrification of ground support equipment; the facilitation of SAF availability and uptake; enabling sustainable landing and take-off cycles; the modulation of airport charges based on CO2 emissions or new aircraft technology; incentives to use biofuel in ground handling; and providing eGPUs [electric ground power units] and PCA [preconditioned air units] for aircraft on stand." ⏮️ Event Recap: Insights from the 9th Smart Airports & Regions Conference Earlier this month, Marilyn Specht, our Sustainability lead in the U.S., spoke at the Smart Airports & Regions Conference, held from July 10-12, in #Denver, Colorado. It was an insightful event focused on connectivity, innovation, and opportunities for sustainable and economic recovery in aviation. During her session, "A Sustainable Reset for Airports," Marilyn emphasized three key opportunities: 🏆 Leveraging Successes from Other Sectors: Accelerating progress by adopting proven strategies. 🤝 Integrating Sustainability: Making sustainability a core component rather than an add-on. 🛠️ Innovative Tools for Decarbonization: Highlighting the use of Carbon Signal to scale decarbonization efforts. The conference echoed themes of sustainability, decarbonization, and ESG across various sessions, envisioning airports as future energy, data, and multimodal transportation hubs. I have a great pleasure and an honour to take part to "The Sustainable Airport Areas Conference" as one of the moderators. The purpose for SAAIC is to exchange ideas, to share best practices and to debate about the Sustainable development of airports and airport areas.
