Networking Basics in the Music Industry: A Funny Yet Insightful Guide Let’s rewind to the early days of my career when I first dipped my toes into the music industry. Picture this: I’m at an industry event, excited but slightly overwhelmed. Instead of diving into conversations, I found myself gravitating toward the food table. Hey, who can resist a good spread, right? I spent the night munching on hors d'oeuvres and sampling every cocktail the bar had to offer. By the end of the evening, my stomach was happily full, but my contact list remained as empty as my drink glass. Sound familiar? It’s easy to get caught up in the perks of an event—especially when social anxiety and imposter syndrome come knocking. I mean, who wouldn’t rather focus on those delightful mini quiches rather than the intimidating task of networking? But here’s where the plot twist comes in: I realized that if I wanted to make real connections, I had to shift my focus. So, I started a new strategy: targeting one person at each event to connect with. Just one. This wasn’t about going overboard or trying to meet everyone in the room. It was about being fully engaged with one individual, forging a meaningful connection, and leaving with at least one new contact. As I became more comfortable, I increased the number of people I reached out to, but I kept it organic. Conversations flowed naturally, and I focused on building genuine relationships rather than collecting business cards. Here’s the takeaway: Networking isn’t about stuffing your face or drowning your nerves in cocktails. It’s about making authentic connections. So, next time you find yourself at an industry event, remember to: Pick one person to engage with. It’s less daunting and more manageable. Be present in the conversation. Authenticity wins over small talk. Gradually expand your network. Once you’re comfortable, you can start mingling with more people. Networking is a skill, and like any skill, it improves with practice. So, skip the buffet and focus on building relationships. Your future self will thank you! #NetworkingTips #MusicIndustry #CareerAdvice #SocialSkills #ProfessionalGrowth #NetworkingFail #AuthenticConnections #OvercomingAnxiety #ImposterSyndrome #MusicBiz #IndustryEvents

🎶 The Secret Sauce to Event Success? Strong Relationships! 🎶 If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my time as a music booking agent, it’s that relationships are at the heart of every successful event—whether it's with the incredible musicians I work with or the clients looking for that perfect performance. 🤝 ✨ Clients: Listening to their vision, understanding their vibe, and making sure they feel supported every step of the way is what I love. From that first enquiry to the final note of the night, I’m there to make sure their event is one to remember. 🌟 🎤 Musicians: Building trust with talented professionals is key. Knowing their strengths and matching them with the right gig ensures a smooth and unforgettable performance. It's not just about filling a spot—it's about creating magic! 🎸🎻 At the end of the day, it’s not just a transaction—it’s a collaboration! 🤩 Seeing happy clients and musicians ready to work together again is the best part of what I do. Here’s to strong connections and even better events! 🥂🎵

These are the moments. The ones BEFORE event attendees show up. Before the speakers are on stage. Before the music starts. It’s in these moments that 1) It sets in how grateful I am to do this work and 2) I get to remind myself of the vision. Many great athletes perform “visuals” before they compete. They imagine what could happen, how they’ll respond, what movements their body will do, etc etc etc. We do this with events. We run through how things will hit home with people in the crowd. We think through the details so nothing feels “weird” or “off”. We play through the music. We imagine how we/our client wants people to FEEL. And then we act/plan/produce accordingly. Wouldn’t it be nice to know you had a team thinking through all of this for you at your upcoming event(s)? It’s a joy and honor to get to create experiences that leave lasting impact. 💥 If you could use some help, it would be our honor. Shoot me a DM or email me at billyb@elevateexperiences.com and let me know.

There are 3 events I’m excited about happening in the San Francisco Bay Area in October and November, hope you can join! If you’re tired of sending 50 DMs a day, sending thousands of cold outbound emails, and sitting in front of a screen (especially if you’re a coach, consultant or solopreneur): Go out and meet awesome people in person, learn together in community, have deep shared experiences, show people your ❤️, and go to places where your people are. This will certainly result in connecting with your SOUL ALIGNED CLIENTS. 99% of my coaching clients are people who I also have deep and meaningful friendships with, so my “work” doesn’t feel like work - we’re simply just walking each other home. This events roundup is a new type of post you can expect to see from me several times per month. If you're interested, subscribe to my Substack! If you think I’m cool and are curious about how I became me, these events roundups will give you a clue. I’ll also let you know which events I’m attending so we can meet up IRL, and which I simply recommend. #SanFranciscoEvents #Networking #PersonalGrowth #MusicDocumentary #TechCrunchDisrupt #Dance #Tantra #CommunityBuilding #Events

I have a question and could use some feedback. Besides the main attraction at an event, what do you look forward to most? Is it the giveaways or the chance for meet and greets? Maybe it’s connecting with folks who share your interests, discovering new artists, or just enjoying the vibe and energy. The memories made and the unique moments can often be just as special as the main event itself. What makes attending an event special?

Here are the effects of networking in real-time. I received this pic early last week from partywatcher, who is one of my clients that lives in Chicago. This photo was taken at some point during the - Chicago es Chingon Cinco de Mayo event - where he performed. Standing next to him is Emily Espinoza, who I connected with at the virtual Getting the Gig event where I was a table host. Emily came into my virtual room interested in working behind the scenes for more live music events. It seemed she hadn't had a lot of luck landing roles with many of the companies operating in the city. I suggested that as she continues her search, she should try to connect with more local artists performing live around the city to see if she could work in the same type of roles that she was already looking for. The very next day I had the realization that I could connect her with partywatcher, who is always planning his next live show in and around the city. I spoke to both of them to gauge interest, and then I connected them via an intro email. It was only a couple of weeks or so later I got the news that Emily was working as support at this show, with plans to already work with him at his next show at Midsommarfest in June. I share this because it's important to celebrate the wins along the path, but also to highlight the importance of looking for alternative ways of staying active with the skills that you'd like to continue to develop. In this case, it may not be Emily's last stop with live music events, but it serves as a two-prong approach. First, she is building up her experience, which strengthens her resume for landing an opportunity with a more established company. Second, she is also building up her own client base and network, which makes her more resilient in times when she is in between bigger gigs, or for if/when she decides to go out and build something on her own. There is always a solution, it just may not look the way you're currently envisioning it in your mind. Sometimes it just takes a different perspective to uncover other valuable opportunities that are not being exploited. I appreciate them both for keeping me updated and allowing me to share this wonderful update with all of you.

There appears to be a slight misconception regarding industry expos in recent times. 🤔 So, you're all excited for what you think is a festival, right? 🎉 You're imagining live music 🎶, drinks 🍹, a party vibe 🎈, and all the free stuff you can collect. But guess what? It's not just about grabbing a beer and walking around without a plan. It's about learning new stuff 📚, meeting important people 🤝, and finding cool products that could totally change the game for your business. 🚀 Next time you hear "expo or summit," think professional growth, not party. It's where you go to learn, network, and find those game-changing insights. 💡 See you at the next expo, ready to take your business to the next level! 📈 #IndustryExpo #Networking #BusinessGrowth #ProfessionalDevelopment

So I was just thinking about a cool post from Julius Solaris earlier this week about the level of noise… sorry I should say the loudness of the music at networking events 😜 and it got me thinking. It’s true that if you really are trying to network, the music should be at a decent volume that enables and encourages great connections to be made. But for those times when you just wanna cut loose, I’m interested to know what you want to listen to. Picture the scene…the corporate award programme is finished, and the band takes to the stage, or the side of the room depending on your set up. Have we heard enough of Daft Punk’s Get Lucky? Is it time for Pharrell to be a little less Happy? Should we finally believe what Bruno Mars has to say? Do we need to hang up this tired playlist or do these corporate favourites add a sense of familiarity to the event and anything too obscure just ruins the mood? What do you want to hear when it’s time to party at B2B events? I love music so much that I crave variety. But is that just me living in my own musical world? Is variety a little too unsafe for the corporate world? If you have time please let me know your thoughts and maybe suggest what songs you’d love to hear at your next corporate event 🎶 I can make it happen for you 😀 #cventconnect #thanksTFL
