The Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) are a set of Principles offering guidance to business on how to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in the workplace, marketplace and community. Established by United Nations Global Compact and UN Women, the WEPs are informed by international labour and human rights standards and grounded in the recognition that businesses have a stake in, and a responsibility for, gender equality and women’s empowerment. WEPs are a primary vehicle for corporate delivery on gender equality dimensions of the 2030 agenda and the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD) Goals. By joining the WEPs community, the CEO signals commitment to this agenda at the highest levels of the company and to work collaboratively in multi stakeholder networks to foster business practices that empower women. These include equal pay for work of equal value, gender-responsive supply chain practices and zero tolerance against sexual harassment in the workplace. Here in Aotearoa New Zealand, a coalition of 4 organisations have come together to create impact for WEP's and I am proud to represent United Nations Women Aotearoa New Zealand in this coalition to advance gender equality in the workplace and change the dynamics particularly in stagnant, traditional and arcadic systems to ensure women are heard, seen, valued, represented and contributing in a meaningful way to the future of meaningful mahi in Aotearoa. When we started on this journey a few years ago, we very quickly realized that this is not something that we can do alone. If we wanted to make real and sustainable change, if we really want to move the needle, we need to move ahead together as an industry. And with that in mind, we launched the Equal at Sea Conference in 2022. Since then, it’s been so encouraging to see the industry leaning in and really making progress on creating a more equitable ecosystem for women at sea. I really believe, this is not something that is a one-time effort, but we need to keep the efforts on, and the conversation going. We need to have the courage to continue, we need to do this collectively.
